However, popular cities such as Berlin, Vienna, Prague and Budapest can become overwhelmed with crowds in December.

But one lesser-known European city often goes under the radar for tourists at Christmas. Dubbed the “Capital of Christmas”, the city welcomed just 3,600 people from the UK last December. There are currently return Ryanair flights from London available for as low as £59 next month.

Vilnius, in Lithuania, is known for its authentic and charming festive experience. In addition to being less crowded than other major European cities, it also boasts unique traditions.

This year, the city is launching the “Vilnius Christmas Before Christmas” tradition on Saturday, December 13. The unique day will include a special currency that can be spent on tasty festive treats across the city, a free Christmas card postal service to anywhere in the world, a 200-strong choir singing Christmas carols, a square featuring 144 uniquely decorated fir trees, and free guided tours with a festive theme.

Eglė Girdzijauskaitė, Head of Communications at Go Vilnius, said: “Christmas is something many of us eagerly await. With this new tradition, ‘Vilnius Christmas Before Christmas,’ this magical time of year is coming early to Lithuania’s capital. What’s more, the festive spirit will be felt not just within our families, but across the whole city.”

The main Vilnius Christmas tree is located in Cathedral Square and is a major attraction for tourists. It is known for its elaborate and creative designs every year.

There are also Christmas markets held on Cathedral Square and Town Hall Square every year. They sell a range of Lithuanian food, handmade crafts and festive drinks.

Ice skating is also on offer near the Town Hall. The rink is also used to host light shows and special performances throughout the Christmas period.

Most visitors choose to take the Christmas train which gives them a festive tour around the old town of Vilnius. People have the choice to hop off and take part in free walking tours which focus on local festive traditions.

Eglė added: “We want tourists and residents alike to feel like a child who has woken up on Christmas morning, whether it is arriving on a specially themed Christmas train, spending special Christmas currency across the city, sending a Christmas card for free, or joining in with a seasonal sing-along.

“Vilnius will turn into a winter wonderland, bringing back a childlike sense of joy and discovery, and it will all be happening two weeks before the actual day.”

Although there is a good chance of snow in Vilnius in December, temperatures can drop as low as -5C. However, tourists are assured of a cosy atmosphere with a combination of Baltic and modern festivities.

As well as being quieter than other cities across Europe, Vilnius is also known for being far more affordable for a Christmas getaway. Flights from London are as low as £59 return while two three-course meals for two, including a bottle of wine, costs an average of £138.

While many people choose to stay at home over the Christmas period, there is something magical about visiting…

[5174
188549,188548,35745,66736,2000,299,5187,1114,21291,22568
0":"post-601058","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-eu","8":"tag-affordable-european-getaway","9":"tag-capital-of-christmas","10":"tag-christmas","11":"tag-christmas-traditions","12":"tag-eu","13":"tag-europe","14":"tag-european","15":"tag-lithuania","16":"tag-travel-deals","17":"tag-vilnius
["GET
