Andrii Yermak, who has quit as Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff yesterday, is just the latest casualty of the anti-corruption investigation engulfing Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The right-hand man to Ukraine’s leader has not been accused of any wrongdoing but a search of his home today appeared to be a final straw.<\/p>\n

This comes as the government has been by a multi-million pound corruption scandal, which has plunged Ukraine into a position of weakness at a critical time.<\/p>\n

What’s being investigated?<\/b><\/p>\n

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine is looking into Timur Mindich, the suspected ringleader of a \u00a375m+ ($100m) kickback scheme involving the state nuclear energy company.<\/p>\n

Mindich is a former business partner of Zelenskyy in his days as a television star. He fled Ukraine shortly after the probe was made public on 10 November.<\/p>\n

It is suspected that individuals have been skimming off around 15% of contracts and pocketing it, our defence analyst Michael Clarke<\/a><\/b> says.<\/p>\n

The political crisis around these allegations has been putting pressure on Zelenskyy and his government.<\/p>\n

Seven people have been charged. Five of them are currently in detention.<\/p>\n

Ukraine’s justice and energy ministers quit over the scandal, and were then formally dismissed by parliament, although both denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

Is Yermak involved?<\/b><\/p>\n

In short, it’s unclear.<\/p>\n

Yermak has not been formally accused of anything and it isn’t clear whether his home being raided is linked to the $100m scandal.<\/p>\n

But the unprecedented search at the heart of Ukraine’s government comes as Kyiv is trying to navigate peace negotiations with the US.<\/p>\n

Yermak’s name did not appear on a list of officials that Zelenskyy said would meet with Washington’s delegation for the next round of talks.<\/p>\n

Aide’s departure is just the latest<\/b><\/p>\n

Two of Yermak’s former deputies, Oleh Tatarov and Rostyslav Shurma, also left the government in 2024 after watchdogs investigated them for financial wrongdoing.<\/p>\n
