{"id":601882,"date":"2025-11-29T19:17:30","date_gmt":"2025-11-29T19:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/601882\/"},"modified":"2025-11-29T19:17:30","modified_gmt":"2025-11-29T19:17:30","slug":"defence-chiefs-told-to-get-on-with-it-and-strip-andrews-last-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/601882\/","title":{"rendered":"Defence chiefs told to \u2018get on with it\u2019 and strip Andrew\u2019s last title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is still a vice-admiral in the Royal Navy, despite the government\u2019s pledge to strip him of the honour four weeks ago at the King\u2019s request.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Senior military figures have described the delay in removing the disgraced former Duke of York\u2019s last remaining title as \u201cextraordinary\u201d and called on the government to \u201cget on with it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">It is up to the government, not the King, to remove Andrew\u2019s vice-admiral title. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor driving a dark car.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/\/2d25ab97-55d7-4d47-b20f-c4570e96f2a3.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>His brother, King Charles, stripped Andrew of royal titles and honours<\/p>\n<p>PETER MACDIARMID<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Andrew, 65, who served in the Royal Navy for 22 years until 2001 and fought in the Falklands as a helicopter pilot, was awarded the honorary rank of vice-admiral by the Navy for his 55th birthday in February 2015, a move approved by his mother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He was due to have been promoted to admiral on his 60th birthday in 2020, but the promotion was deferred after he withdrew from public duties in 2019 following the disastrous Newsnight interview about his friendship with the convicted paedophile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/jeffrey-epstein\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeffrey Epstein<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Last month, after mounting pressure over Andrew\u2019s links to Epstein, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/royal-family\/article\/prince-andrew-to-leave-royal-lodge-2gwwdrcqb\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> King formally stripped his brother of his royal titles and honours<\/a> \u2014 Prince Andrew, Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, Baron Killyleagh and the style of HRH.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">A statement issued by Buckingham Palace on October 30 said: \u201cTheir Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Three days later the defence secretary, John Healey, said the government would \u201cwork to remove\u201d Andrew\u2019s last remaining title of vice-admiral. In an interview with the BBC, Healey said: \u201cThis is a move that\u2019s right. It\u2019s a move the King has indicated we should take, and we\u2019re working on that at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">But last night, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the process was still not complete. The MoD said the matter is \u201congoing\u201d but has declined to say what stage the process is at, or provide a reason for the delay. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">An MoD spokesman said: \u201cDefence continues to act in line with His Majesty\u2019s intent regarding the process to remove the style, titles and honours of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Admiral Lord West, the former first sea lord and chief of the naval staff, said: \u201cIt seems extraordinary that it is taking so long and I cannot see why it is that difficult to remove it. He has paid a penalty for his stupid behaviour and that is right. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cWhat I would not approve of is if he kept the title, that would not be appropriate with his behaviour. We recently swiftly removed the first sea lord from his position and he had the rank of admiral, so it cannot be that difficult.
