You see the photo above.<\/p>\n

Two sweet boys. Two brothers. Hair brushed, clothes clean, faces that look like any kids you\u2019ve ever loved or stood next to at a school assembly. They\u2019re alive in that picture. Handsome. Just little kids.<\/p>\n

These are Fadi and Jumaa Tamer Abu \u2018Asi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One is eight.
The other is eleven.<\/p>\n

My friend Hani<\/strong>, who works for UNRWA<\/strong> here in the United States and whose entire family lives in Gaza<\/strong>, posted their photo and wrote these words:<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo brothers \u2014 Fadi and Jumaa Tamer Abu \u2018Asi, just 8 and 11 years old \u2014 were killed today by an Israeli strike near Al-Farabi School in Bani Suheila, east of Khan Younis. Rest in peace \ud83d\udd4a\ufe0f<\/p>\n

And let\u2019s be clear: the killing has not stopped.<\/p>\n

Not in Gaza.
Not in the West Bank.
Not in the neighboring countries repeatedly struck by Israel.<\/p>\n

This is today\u2019s reality \u2014 children still being targeted and killed.<\/p>\n

So I ask sincerely: Does this look like a ceasefire to you? Does it sound like one?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I read that, then looked back at their faces, and I felt like the air left my chest.<\/p>\n

We are told, over and over, that there is a ceasefire.<\/p>\n

We are told that \u201ccalm\u201d is returning. We\u2019re told about \u201cstability,\u201d \u201cde-escalation,\u201d \u201cconditions on the ground improving.\u201d<\/p>\n

But today, in Bani Suheila<\/strong>, east of Khan Younis<\/strong>, an Israeli strike hit near Al-Farabi School<\/strong> and killed this eight-year-old and this eleven-year-old. Two brothers. On a day when the world is being assured that the guns are quieter now.<\/p>\n

I want you to sit with that.<\/p>\n

Not a battlefield.
Not some secret tunnel.
Not a weapons depot.<\/p>\n

A school. And two boys.<\/p>\n

When Hani posts little bits about his life, I always feel the distance between us and him. He lives here in the United States and works for UNRWA, trying to serve his people from an empire that funds their killers. His body is here. His heart, his mind, his nightmares \u2014 they are in Gaza, where his family lives and suffers.<\/p>\n

For him, these aren\u2019t news alerts or \u201cupdates.\u201d They are his people.<\/p>\n

What Hani wrote next is the part that stabbed me:<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd let\u2019s be clear: the killing has not stopped.<\/p>\n

Not in Gaza.
Not in the West Bank.
Not in the neighboring countries repeatedly struck by Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He\u2019s not speaking as a pundit. He\u2019s speaking as a man whose family is still there. He is watching this every single day. He knows that while leaders sign papers and cameras roll, the bombs and shells and bullets do not obey the press releases.<\/p>\n

The killing has not stopped.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not in Gaza, where kids like Fadi and Jumaa are still being targeted and killed.
Not in the West Bank, where settlers and soldiers have used this genocide as cover to accelerate their own campaign of theft and terror.
Not in southern Lebanon, Syria, and other neighboring lands Israel keeps striking, like the violence is a traveling show that can just set up anywhere it wants.<\/p>\n

I know governments and pundits are eager to move on, to declare this chapter \u201cover,\u201d to rebrand genocide as \u201cpost-conflict stabilization.\u201d But Hani\u2019s words cut through all of that fake sophistication and go straight to the heart:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThis is today\u2019s reality \u2014 children still being targeted and killed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

For months now, we\u2019ve been trained to accept a simple script:<\/p>\n

Israel massacres Palestinians.
The world pretends not to notice until the body count gets so high it can\u2019t be denied.
Then come the carefully worded statements. The \u201ccalls for restraint.\u201d The \u201cworries\u201d about civilians.
Maybe, if enough pressure builds, we get a word like \u201cceasefire.\u201d<\/p>\n

But what does that word mean to a mother in Khan Younis burying her eight-year-old and eleven-year-old sons killed near a school?<\/p>\n

What does it mean to Hani, seeing this photo of these boys alive on his phone one week, then reading their names on a list of the dead the next?<\/p>\n

When the killing of children continues<\/strong>, when new graves are dug every day, when \u201cisolated strikes\u201d still slam into homes and schools and playgrounds, what exactly has ceased?<\/p>\n

As my brother Hani asks:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cDoes this look like a ceasefire to you? Does it sound like one?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

If your answer is no \u2014 if your heart and your eyes and your conscience say no \u2014 then you have to let that shape how you move in the world. How you talk. How you vote. How you give. How you pray.<\/p>\n

One of the tricks of power is to smother real lives under big, vague language.<\/p>\n

\u201cRegional stability.\u201d
\u201cSecurity interests.\u201d
\u201cStrategic objectives.\u201d
\u201cCeasefire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, two boys named Fadi<\/strong> and Jumaa<\/strong> are killed near a school. They have parents. Siblings. Favorite games. Fears. Dreams you\u2019ll never hear about.<\/p>\n

Those lives get flattened into \u201ccivilian casualties\u201d in a paragraph somewhere, and then a few days later even that paragraph disappears into a deeper fog.<\/p>\n

I refuse to let that be the end of their story.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They were brothers. Eight and eleven. Their last moments on this earth should not have been terror and fire near a school under a sky that has never stopped trying to kill them.<\/p>\n

If you claim to care about children, if you claim to care about peace, if you ever posted \u201cpray for peace\u201d or \u201cstop the war\u201d when you saw the images from Gaza, I need you to understand that peace is not a word that lives in statements. It lives in whether kids like Fadi and Jumaa get to grow up.<\/p>\n

And right now, they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t bring these boys back. Neither can you. Neither can Hani.<\/p>\n

What we can do is refuse to play along with the lie that the genocide is over, that the killing has stopped, that Gaza is now a \u201cpost-conflict\u201d story.<\/p>\n

We can refuse to let words like \u201cceasefire\u201d be used to wash the blood off the hands of the people who keep funding and arming and justifying this, day after day.<\/p>\n

We can honor what Hani is doing \u2014 working through UNRWA while his family is still in Gaza \u2014 by using our own voices and platforms to keep saying their names, sharing their faces, and telling the truth about what is actually happening on the ground.<\/p>\n
