{"id":602439,"date":"2025-11-30T01:55:25","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T01:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/602439\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T01:55:25","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T01:55:25","slug":"belgium-slams-eu-plan-to-use-frozen-russian-assets-for-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/602439\/","title":{"rendered":"Belgium Slams EU Plan to Use Frozen Russian Assets for Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"165\" data-end=\"432\">Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has renewed his criticism of an EU proposal to use frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine, calling the plan \u201cfundamentally wrong\u201d and warning it could expose Belgium to severe legal and financial risks, according to a letter seen by AFP.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"434\" data-end=\"702\">In the four-page letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, De Wever urged officials not to venture \u201cinto uncharted legal and financial waters\u201d as Brussels pushes to tap immobilized Russian central bank assets to secure a 140 billion euro\u00a0($162 billion) loan for Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"704\" data-end=\"981\">Belgium is central to the debate because most of the assets are held at Euroclear, the Brussels-based financial clearinghouse.
