{"id":602778,"date":"2025-11-30T06:06:18","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T06:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/602778\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T06:06:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T06:06:18","slug":"family-of-murdered-claire-inglis-demand-john-swinney-release-crown-office-report-into-failures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/602778\/","title":{"rendered":"Family of murdered Claire Inglis demand John Swinney release Crown Office report into failures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following Claire&#8217;s death an expert social work report was commissioned into the case which found the 28-year-old and her son were \u201cinvisible in the system\u201d.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_Screenshot-2024-11-30-at-195419.png\" loading=\"eager\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">The parents of murdered <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/family-claire-inglis-want-tough-35084323\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Claire Inglis<\/a> used a meeting with John Swinney to demand the release of a Crown Office report into failures that led to their daughter\u2019s death. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/family-claire-inglis-want-tough-35084323\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Christopher McGowan<\/a> was jailed for the brutal killing of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/family-claire-inglis-want-tough-35084323\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Claire<\/a>, six weeks after being freed to live at the flat she shared with her son.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">McGowan, who had 39 convictions, including aggravated domestic assault, had been bailed to the mum\u2019s Stirling home three times. Following her death an expert social work report was commissioned into the case which found Claire and her son were \u201cinvisible in the system\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">But her parents Ian and Fiona, who have spent four years fighting for answers, only received a brief summary of the report. This month, supported by Scottish Tory leader Russell Findlay, the couple met First Minister Swinney to demand the release of the report in full and to call for a fatal accident inquiry into their daughter\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_JS389123954-1.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Handout &#8211; Ian and Fiona Inglis, parents of murder victim Claire Inglis meeting with Russel Findlay (left) and John Swinney (right)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Fiona, 64, from Stirling, said: \u201cWe have waited so long, we just need answers now. We met with Mr Swinney for over an hour and it was an emotional conversation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">\u201cI did say to him, \u2018You\u2019re a father, you will know how we are feeling. What would you do in our situation? He was very honest and he said he had no idea of the trauma, the horror and emotional toll we had endured since losing Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">In the letter summarised by the Crown Office, it states one of the questions asked of the report was whether Claire\u2019s murder could potentially have been prevented. But no answer is provided.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_JS314965067-2.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Christopher McGowan, who had 39 previous convictions, was released on bail to Claire\u2019s home which she shared with her young son.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/family-claire-inglis-want-tough-35084323\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">McGowan<\/a>, then 28, was jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum of 23 years behind bars in October 2023. Swinney, who met Ian, 62, and Fiona last November, said: \u201cIf the report can be released I am very happy for that to be the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">First Minister John Swinney said: \u201cI extend my deepest sympathies to Fiona and Ian Inglis. The independent Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service is investigating the wider circumstances of the case, and I understand further engagement has taken place with the family after I wrote to the Lord Advocate to convey their views.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Fiona and Ian also met with Crown officials earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">A spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service:\u201cWe listened to their concerns, shared an update on the investigation and carefully took them through the draft expert report in detail.
