Birmingham City Council has performed a U-turn on plans for two city tips amid fears of traffic chaos.<\/p>\n
The authority had revealed plans to remove the booking system<\/a> for two of its five household recycling centres in Sutton Coldfield<\/a> and in Tameside Drive in Castle Bromwich<\/a> from tomorrow, Wednesday, April 30.<\/p>\n But Sutton Coldfield councillors, aware of previous traffic problems at the Norris Way site, highlighted concerns raised with them that a removal of the booking system would lead to major congestion.<\/p>\n READ MORE: Massive Birmingham bin strike update as 200 more workers face pay cut blow<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n The Norris Way site sits close to a railway bridge, which has a three-way traffic-lighted junction, which effectively restricts the road and caused congestion at peak periods.<\/p>\n With the announcement that bookings would not be required, there were fears the traffic jams of the past could return.<\/p>\n The council\u2019s household waste recycling centre appointment page has now returned to its previous appearance and does not now reference changes from Wednesday.<\/p>\n The booking system at all sites – Sutton, Castle Bromwich, Tyseley<\/a>, Perry Barr<\/a> and Kings Norton<\/a> – remains.<\/p>\n Tory councillors Richard Parkin (Sutton Reddicap) and David Pears (Sutton Trinity) raised the issue with city environment boss Coun Majid Mahmood when they became aware of the proposed change.<\/p>\n Both said they had not been consulted in advance and, if they had, they would not have recommended ditching the booking system in Sutton because of traffic concerns.<\/p>\n Coun Parkin said he was aghast to learn of the proposed change on social media and residents rather than directly from the council leadership.<\/p>\n READ MORE: City bin workers pay cut ‘unjustified and escalation of dispute’ says Unite<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n He said: \u201cThey don\u2019t know what they are doing.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a shame it\u2019s taken councillors to ask questions to make them change their mind.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s one disaster after another. Like the green waste. We said: ‘Don\u2019t take money from people if you can\u2019t deliver the service’.<\/p>\n \u201cThey took the money and then had to refund people.<\/p>\n \u201cIt gives the impression of a rudderless council with no sense of direction or control.
