To be more precise, during the first half of 2025, it saw a whopping 62 percent increase in the number of international visitors compared to 2019.<\/p>\n<p>It officially surpasses far more well-established destinations in the continent, most notably the Mediterranean nation of Malta, which ranks just beneath it at number 4, with a 49% rise in visitors since the pre-pandemic era, and Greece, at number 10, with an even more modest 24% increase.<\/p>\n<p>Only Uzbekistan, which is variously described as partially-European and Central Asian, and Albania chart higher than Moldova, with upticks of 73% and 122%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Aerial-view-of-Chisinau-Moldova-in-fall.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Aerial-view-of-Chisinau-Moldova-in-fall.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"Aerial view of Chisinau, Moldova in fall\" class=\"wp-image-215494 lazyload\"   data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Aerial-view-of-Chisinau-Moldova-in-fall.jpg\" id=\"mv-trellis-img-2\" loading=\"lazy\" data-trellis-processed=\"1\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Contrary to some of these competitors, however, <strong>Moldova has no beaches; it&#8217;s not particularly known for permanently snow-capped highlands that would draw winter sports enthusiasts;<\/strong> and it&#8217;s not exactly the easiest place to fly into\u2014especially if you&#8217;re coming all the way from America.<\/p>\n<p>So what&#8217;s the big deal here?<\/p>\n<p>What Have Been Tourists Sleeping On All Along?<\/p>\n<p>As we briefly touched on, Moldova&#8217;s main appeal is its<strong>\u00a0off-the-beaten-path<\/strong><strong>, rough-around-the-edges character<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It is distinguished for being one of Europe&#8217;s least visited countries, but that&#8217;s largely thanks to suboptimal promotion rather than any inherent qualities.<\/p>\n<p>From the wetlands and rolling vineyards of Southern Moldova, to the capital city of Chi\u0219in\u0103u, with its thriving social scene, modernist architecture, and lush urban parks, to the underrated North, home to the fairytale castle town of Soroca, it is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/the-secret-is-out-barely-any-tourists-visit-this-affordable-and-authentic-european-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boundless treasure trove<\/a> begging to be unearthed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Cafe-in-Moldova.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Cafe-in-Moldova.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"Cafe in Moldova\" class=\"wp-image-215512 lazyload\"   data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Cafe-in-Moldova.jpg\" id=\"mv-trellis-img-3\" data-trellis-processed=\"1\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The best part? It&#8217;s oddly quiet still. Despite the big rise in visitors, Moldova had only about 400,000 guests sojourn in Moldovan hotels and guesthouses this year, 212,200 of which were foreigners.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you&#8217;re strolling \u0218tefan cel Mare Park in the capital, with its tree-lined alleys and fountain-dominated squares, or exploring infinite tunnels stacked from floor to ceiling with wine bottles, extending for a whopping 125 miles in<strong> the world&#8217;s largest wine cellar<\/strong>, big crowds are not a concern here.<\/p>\n<p>Who Would Have Thought Moldova Would Be So Affordable?<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of the world&#8217;s largest wine cellar, that&#8217;s Mile\u0219tii Mici for you, a short 27-minute drive outside Chi\u0219in\u0103u. Wine tastings and tours start from around $90, and it&#8217;s a must-do for oenophiles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Wine-Fountain-In-Moldova-Eastern-Europe.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Wine-Fountain-In-Moldova-Eastern-Europe.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"Wine Fountain In Moldova, Eastern Europe.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-177573 lazyload\"   data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Wine-Fountain-In-Moldova-Eastern-Europe.jpg\" id=\"mv-trellis-img-4\" data-trellis-processed=\"1\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Moldova is a bitterly cold country to visit in winter if you&#8217;re feeling the pull right now, so bear in mind visiting these historic, Soviet-era wine cellars\u2014Mile\u0219tii Mici is one of several scattered around the country\u2014is truly your best bet at keeping warm (and that&#8217;s no small potatoes).<\/p>\n<p>Now that we brought up potatoes, it&#8217;s probably a good time to mention that Moldova&#8217;s potato-heavy food can be sampled for <strong>as cheap as your mildly generous restaurant tip back home<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A flavorful mix of Romanian and Russian culinary traditions, it includes hearty chicken soups with lots of dill (zeam\u0103), the undisputably Balkan\u00a0m\u0103m\u0103lig\u0103\u00a0(their version of polenta, usually served with cheese and sour cream), and, of course, plenty of roasted pork and lamb.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Romanian-Cuisine-Served-Alfresco-In-Romania-Or-Moldova-Eastern-Europe.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Romanian-Cuisine-Served-Alfresco-In-Romania-Or-Moldova-Eastern-Europe.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"Romanian Cuisine Served Alfresco In Romania Or Moldova, Eastern Europe.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-177571 lazyload\"   data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Romanian-Cuisine-Served-Alfresco-In-Romania-Or-Moldova-Eastern-Europe.jpg\" id=\"mv-trellis-img-5\" data-trellis-processed=\"1\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On average, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant in the Moldovan capital will set you back by $8.77, or the equivalent in Moldovan leu (the local currency).<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re planning to splurge a little, taking into account this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/one-of-europes-cheapest-countries-launching-new-digital-nomad-visa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of Europe&#8217;s most budget-friendly destinations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So\u2026 On The Transnistria \u2018Issue&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Then of course, there&#8217;s Transnistria, or how TikTokers love to call it, \u2018<strong>The Country That Doesn&#8217;t Exist<\/strong>\u2018.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Tiraspol-In-Transnistria-A-Breakaway-State-Between-Ukraine-And-Moldova-Eastern-Europe.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Tiraspol-In-Transnistria-A-Breakaway-State-Between-Ukraine-And-Moldova-Eastern-Europe.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"Tiraspol In Transnistria, A Breakaway State Between Ukraine And Moldova, Eastern Europe.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-177577 lazyload\"   data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Tiraspol-In-Transnistria-A-Breakaway-State-Between-Ukraine-And-Moldova-Eastern-Europe.jpg\" id=\"mv-trellis-img-6\" data-trellis-processed=\"1\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It does exist, de facto, except it&#8217;s not recognized by any UN member state. We guess they&#8217;re North Cyprus&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/this-lesser-known-mediterranean-destination-is-the-perfect-affordable-getaway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spiritual sibling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To the rest of the world, they&#8217;re simply a breakaway province of Moldova currently under Russian occupation, though within the boundaries of Transnistria, they hold their own elections (sort of), have their own currency, and even issue their own passports (though we doubt these are of any use outside Transnistria or Russia).<\/p>\n<p>The self-proclaimed capital, <strong>Tiraspol is one of the last surviving Soviet microcosms<\/strong>, with Lenin statues galore, grand boulevards flanked by Stalinist edifices, and urban infrastructure that&#8217;s essentially frozen in time, back in the (arguably) glorious days of the USSR.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/City-Bus-In-Tiraspol-Capital-Of-Transnistria-A-Breakaway-State-In-Moldova-Central-Europe.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/City-Bus-In-Tiraspol-Capital-Of-Transnistria-A-Breakaway-State-In-Moldova-Central-Europe.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"City Bus In Tiraspol, Capital Of Transnistria, A Breakaway State In Moldova, Central Europe.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-177578 lazyload\"   data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/City-Bus-In-Tiraspol-Capital-Of-Transnistria-A-Breakaway-State-In-Moldova-Central-Europe.jpg\" id=\"mv-trellis-img-7\" data-trellis-processed=\"1\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is a hard border in place, with passport checks and all, but you can easily visit Transnistria from Chi\u0219in\u0103u, though the U.S. Government doesn&#8217;t advise it. It&#8217;s all but an extension of Russia, remember?<\/p>\n<p>If you do decide to go\u2014and we must add most foreigners, including Americans, face no issues\u2014you&#8217;re on your own. Should things go awry at the border, or you find yourself in trouble by crossing an invisible line into a no-go zone in Tiraspol, you&#8217;re on your own.<\/p>\n<p>How To Get To Moldova<\/p>\n<p>The easiest way to get to Moldova is by flying, usually into <strong>Eugen Doga International Airport <\/strong>(RMO), which serves the capital city.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Central-Park-with-Cathedral-and-Steeple-in-Chisinau-Moldova.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Central-Park-with-Cathedral-and-Steeple-in-Chisinau-Moldova.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"Central Park with Cathedral and Steeple in Chisinau, Moldova\" class=\"wp-image-173957 lazyload\"   data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Central-Park-with-Cathedral-and-Steeple-in-Chisinau-Moldova.jpg\" id=\"mv-trellis-img-8\" data-trellis-processed=\"1\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a focus hub for many European low-cost carriers, like FlyOne, HiSky, and WizzAir, so you know the drill at this point: no Transatlantic flights don&#8217;t mean you can&#8217;t get there hassle-free, it just means you&#8217;ll need to add a little stopover first in a mainline European airport.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re coming straight from America, some options are Frankfurt (FRA), Vienna (VIE), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), and, more recently, Bucharest-Otopeni (OTP), in neighboring Romania, which started hosting U.S. flights <a href=\"https:\/\/www.traveloffpath.com\/budget-airline-launching-new-flight-from-u-s-to-one-of-europes-most-underrated-cities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as of this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Wanna keep the Soviet vibes going? You may alternatively hop on an overnight train from Bucharest to Chi\u0219in\u0103u, in a communist-era train that&#8217;s hardly seen any major upgrades in the past 20 years.
