{"id":603701,"date":"2025-11-30T16:52:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T16:52:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/603701\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T16:52:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T16:52:13","slug":"torfaen-labour-call-out-reform-over-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/603701\/","title":{"rendered":"Torfaen Labour &#8216;call out&#8217; Reform over climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Reform, which polls show could pose a major threat to Welsh Labour\u2019s dominance of the Senedd at next May\u2019s election, has a four strong group on Torfaen Borough Council.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  When its ruling Labour cabinet discussed a report measuring how it has performed against targets, such as reducing energy use, in its plan to tackle climate change and address threats to the natural environment senior councillors appeared to take aim at Reform.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Cabinet member, and Pontnewydd councillor, Sue Morgan who has responsibility for sustainability said \u201csome members\u201d of the council claim there a greater threats than climate change but said \u201cthis Labour administration knows better\u201d while council leader Anthony Hunt said the council is committed to action due the threat posed rather than it being \u201csome ultra woke council\u201d.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Cabinet member David Daniels, who also represents Pontnewydd in Cwmbran, went further and said he would \u201ccall out\u201d Reform who he said don\u2019t want work to address climate change to continue.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In response Cllr David Thomas, who leads the Reform group on Torfaen council, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service the party \u201crespects\u201d the council\u2019s ongoing work on environmental issues but said: \u201cWe reject unscientific alarmism and policies that harm the economy.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A report for the cabinet highlighted the council has completed, or is on course to achieve, 81 per cent of the actions it said it would take in its five-year climate and nature emergency action plan agreed by the cabinet in February 2022.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The plan shows, against a baseline year of 2019, the council has reduced emissions from its buildings, vehicles and streetlighting and produced financial savings through lower utility bills.\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Cllr Morgan said Storm Claudia, which badly impacted neighbouring Monmouthshire, demonstrated the real threat to \u201cour beautiful valley and wellbeing of our families\u201d.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She said: \u201cThat should leave us in no doubt, if we ever were, this is no time to put our heads in the sand or fingers in our ears.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cSome members of this council may want to convince us the threats come from other directions or might want to divert us to issues of traffic management or pseudo patriotic gestures but this Labour administration knows better.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Addressing the financial impact Cllr Morgan said it would be \u201cworth paying\u201d even if it cost the council but said it is saving money and bringing in funds: \u201cThe report clearly shows our work to tackle these twin emergencies is bringing in considerable external funding and lower running costs for the council, community organisations and buildings and that is freeing money for teachers, community support and a thousand other things.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Earlier this year Cllr Morgan was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwalesargus.co.uk\/news\/25094414.torfaen-borough-council-says-energy-savings-benefit-schools\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repeatedly pressed, at full council meetings, by Cllr Thomas to explain savings attributed to tackling climate change<\/a>.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  At this week\u2019s cabinet meeting her ward colleague Cllr Daniels said he took \u201cgreat heart\u201d from the council\u2019s efforts and stated Cwmbran\u2019s Able Radio, which supports people with learning difficulties and autism, had said it had saved \u00a31,500 a month on energy costs as one of 38 schemes to support sports and community centres, charities and businesses with energy efficiency.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He then attacked Reform who he said wouldn\u2019t continue with such a programme.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Cllr Daniels said: \u201cThere are some who don\u2019t want this to continue. Those people are Reform and I\u2019m going to call them out. They\u2019ve made very explicit comments about climate change and net zero that are quite frankly unscientific.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Earlier this year Reform MP Richard Tice told Sky News there is \u201cno evidence that man-made CO2 is going to change climate change\u201d after setting out plans to impose taxes on the renewable energy sector and scrap the UK\u2019s net zero target, if Reform UK were elected into power.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Council leader Anthony Hunt said: \u201cThis is like any inconvenient truth we can either address it or hide from it and bury our heads in the sand and I\u2019m glad we\u2019ve got a clear commitment to not hide and take action that does create jobs and make savings for local groups.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe\u2019re not tackling this because we are some ultra-woke council but because there is a challenge that affects our communities and we want to address it as it offers benefits to some of those groups.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Cllr Thomas, who as an opposition councillor isn\u2019t entitled to speak at, or required to attend, cabinet meetings said after the meeting the comments demonstrated Labour is \u201cworried\u201d about Reform.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In response to claims Reform wouldn\u2019t support the council\u2019s climate policies and\u00a0it has made \u201cunscientific\u201d comments on the subject Cllr Thomas said: \u201cWhile we respect the council\u2019s ongoing work on environmental issues, Reform UK prioritises practical, affordable solutions over expensive net zero targets that burden taxpayers without delivering real results.
