{"id":603865,"date":"2025-11-30T18:52:32","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T18:52:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/603865\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T18:52:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T18:52:32","slug":"31-arrested-on-college-green-over-palestine-action-placards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/603865\/","title":{"rendered":"31 arrested on College Green over Palestine Action placards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <strong>Dana Datu<\/strong>, News Reporter<\/p>\n<p><strong>The City Centre protest, held November 29, was organised by the Defend Our Juries campaign, protesting the government\u2019s proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist group in July.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At least 11 cities across England saw similar demonstrations yesterday, with 34 arrested in Manchester and 25 in Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p>By 1:00 pm, around 30 protesters arrived at Bristol&#8217;s College Green, the majority of them in their 60s and 70s.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"kg-bookmark-container\" href=\"https:\/\/epigram.org.uk\/17-arrested-at-pro-palestine-action-protest-on-college-green\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>17 arrested at pro-Palestine Action protest in Bristol<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday afternoon, July 19, 17 individuals were arrested after a protest on College Green against the proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation, and a number of placards seized by the police.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/iryna-marienko-fF_WRqAxVyY-unsplash-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onerror=\"this.style.display = 'none'\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By 1:30 pm, the first protester in line was arrested.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Avon and Somerset police approached each participant and advised them that their support for Palestine Action was a criminal offence. If a protester did not take down their sign, they were arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Arrests were made every five or ten minutes, including notable environmental campaigner and author Sir Jonathon Porritt.<\/p>\n<p>This protest follows a thread of similar Palestine Action demonstrations in Bristol; in July, <a href=\"https:\/\/epigram.org.uk\/17-arrested-at-pro-palestine-action-protest-on-college-green\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Epigram<\/a> reported on the arrest of 17 individuals on College Green.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"kg-bookmark-container\" href=\"https:\/\/epigram.org.uk\/palestine-protest-senate-house-university-of-bristol-defence-companies-75m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>Students outside Senate protest University\u2019s \u2018\u00a375m\u2019 ties to defence companies supplying Israel<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Evelyn Welch&#8230; No amount of money will help you to sleep at night\u2019, said one University of Bristol student with a close friend in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/shot-of-protest-4.JPG\" alt=\"\" onerror=\"this.style.display = 'none'\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Non-compliant individuals were carried by at least four police officers. Every arrest was followed by fellow protesters cheering, clapping, and even ringing bells in support.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The last arrest was made around 4:30 pm, bringing the protest to an end.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avonandsomerset.police.uk\/news\/2025\/11\/arrests-made-during-bristol-protest\/?ref=epigram.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Avon and Somerset Police<\/a> have confirmed 31 protesters were arrested, with 29 violating Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000 for \u2018displaying articles in support of a proscribed organisation.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The remaining two individuals were arrested for separate offences, including one woman detained \u2018on suspicion of failing to provide details\u2019, under the Police Reform Act 2002.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"kg-bookmark-container\" href=\"https:\/\/epigram.org.uk\/protest-against-city-centre-migrant-hotel-huge-police-presence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>Counter-protesters vastly outnumber anti-immigrant side outside City Centre hotel<\/p>\n<p>UKIP leader Nick Tenconi joined 75 protestors organised by the Bristol Patriots on November 15.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-11-16-at-17.34.55--2--1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" onerror=\"this.style.display = 'none'\"\/><\/a><a class=\"kg-bookmark-container\" href=\"https:\/\/epigram.org.uk\/university-of-bristol-university-challenge-wonderfully-stressful\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Wonderfully stressful\u2019 last round of University Challenge for Bristol<\/p>\n<p>In last night\u2019s extremely close game, the University of Bristol lost to Warwick in their second stint of the series.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/p0mhmcf3-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" onerror=\"this.style.display = 'none'\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of those arrested was retired GP Diana Warner, who said to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol247.com\/news-and-features\/news\/30-people-arrested-during-protest-in-support-of-palestine-action\/?ref=epigram.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol 24\/7<\/a> that as a daughter of a Holocaust survivor, \u2018I cannot stand by while my country and my government pay and aid and abet the genocide of the Gaza people.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Defend Our Juries said on their <a href=\"https:\/\/defendourjuries.net\/?ref=epigram.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> that between November 18 and 29, the group \u2018launched the most widespread mass civil disobedience across the UK in modern British history.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"kg-bookmark-container\" href=\"https:\/\/epigram.org.uk\/bristol-su-2024-code-of-conduct-review-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>An update on Bristol SU\u2019s 2024 Code of Conduct Review<\/p>\n<p>To date, the SU has implemented 31 of the recommendations outlined in its 2024 Code of Conduct review. The Code of Conduct now explicitly prohibits sexual misconduct, sexual violence, and sexual harrassment, as demanded by the University of Bristol Ladies Hockey Club (UBLHC).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/IMG_1321-2-1-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" onerror=\"this.style.display = 'none'\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inspector Ben Spence said: <\/p>\n<p>\u2018While we will always work to enable peaceful and lawful protest, we have always made it clear that we will intervene where criminal offences are committed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The protest has now safely concluded, and the police operation has been stood down.
