\n Aftyn Behn, the Democratic nominee in a Tennessee special election<\/a> on Tuesday, repeatedly pivoted to a message of affordability this morning when pressed on key political issues.\n <\/p>\n

\n Behn is running to fill the seat of former GOP Rep. Mark Green, who resigned this year. Democrats are hoping to use the playbook that brought their party success<\/a> earlier this month in a district President Donald Trump carried by 22 points in 2024.\n <\/p>\n

\n In a wide-ranging interview on \u201cInside Politics Sunday,\u201d Behn wouldn\u2019t answer directly when pressed by CNN\u2019s Manu Raju on issues fracturing Washington.\n <\/p>\n

\n Asked repeatedly if she would have voted to reopen the government during this year\u2019s shutdown, Behn said that if she had been in office at the time, she would have wanted to hear from constituents at town halls before deciding.\n <\/p>\n

\n Asked by Raju if she has confidence in her party\u2019s leaders, Behn pointed to a \u201cnew generation of leadership\u201d who \u201cwant to see Democratic leaders that step up, especially in moments like this that require a fearless, bold leadership.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n She would not say whether she would vote for Hakeem Jeffries to become House speaker if Democrats take back the majority next fall.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe represent very different districts, and I\u2019ve got 48 hours to flip a congressional district and really send a message to Washington, like I said, that they need to get serious about health care costs,\u201d she said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Behn, who will hold a tele-rally with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tomorrow, said she\u2019s aligned with the \u201cstrain of the Democratic party that cares about holding corporations accountable\u201d and other affordability issues.\n <\/p>\n

\n She declined to say whether she agrees with Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s message about abolishing ICE.
