{"id":604466,"date":"2025-12-01T02:39:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-01T02:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/604466\/"},"modified":"2025-12-01T02:39:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-01T02:39:13","slug":"breast-cancer-patients-in-northeast-england-harmed-by-state-run-surgery-unit-report-philstar-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/604466\/","title":{"rendered":"Breast cancer patients in northeast England harmed by state-run surgery unit: report \u2022 PhilSTAR Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dozens of women with <a href=\"https:\/\/philstarlife.com\/self\/509731-new-hope-for-patients-with-less-common-breast-cancer\" style=\"color: #236fa1;\" data-darkreader-inline-color=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breast cancer<\/a> in a swathe of northeast England suffered &#8220;physical and psychological harm&#8221; due to &#8220;delayed diagnosis, unnecessary procedures or missed opportunities,&#8221; a scathing report has found.<\/p>\n<p>The review, commissioned by the area&#8217;s state-run regional health authority into its own Breast Surgery Services unit and released Monday, Dec. 1, followed &#8220;escalating concerns&#8221; about various aspects of its performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A BBC investigation published Friday reported a number of women had been left &#8220;traumatised&#8221; by their breast cancer treatment at the facility, telling the broadcaster they felt &#8220;butchered&#8221; by surgery.<\/p>\n<p>The 232-page report ordered by County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust uncovered &#8220;a decade of systemic failures in clinical oversight, governance, and leadership&#8221; at the breast cancer unit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Patients experienced avoidable harm, including delayed diagnoses, unnecessary mastectomies and axillary clearance, and benign procedures that were not clinically indicated,&#8221; it concluded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Axillary clearance removes lymph nodes in the armpit (axilla) close to the breast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These failures resulted in significant physical, emotional, and psychological consequences for patients and staff,&#8221; the report added.<\/p>\n<p>The report raised concerns that millions of pounds were spent delivering services at private clinics where Trust consultants also had roles, presenting &#8220;potential conflicts of interest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More than 200 cases are now being investigated at CDDFT, with 43 reported to involve &#8220;significant harm,&#8221; according to the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>It said one death was also being examined.<\/p>\n<p>The Trust apologized on Monday, Dec. 1 for the failings, saying new leadership already in place would implement &#8220;a comprehensive programme of reform and improvement&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dozens of women with breast cancer in a swathe of northeast England suffered &#8220;physical and psychological harm&#8221; due&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":604467,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5008],"tags":[748,4781,393,77,4884,388,141770,14966,141769,141771,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-604466","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-england","8":"tag-britain","9":"tag-celebrity","10":"tag-england","11":"tag-entertainment","12":"tag-great-britain","13":"tag-lifestyle","14":"tag-philippine-star","15":"tag-philippines","16":"tag-philippines-news","17":"tag-philstar","18":"tag-uk","19":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115641998834986436","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/604466","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=604466"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/604466\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/604467"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=604466"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=604466"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=604466"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
