The battle of the London boroughs continues. Richmond-upon-Thames\u00a0was recently\u00a0named\u00a0London\u2019s best borough<\/a>\u00a0in one\u00a0ranking while\u00a0Islington\u00a0took the top prize<\/a>\u00a0in another, but now a southeast borough has entered the chat. The New London Architecture (NLA) awards has just named its \u2018Borough of the Year\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Most\u00a0rankings of London boroughs<\/a>\u00a0look at a\u00a0whole range of factors,\u00a0like food offerings, crime rates and outdoor space,\u00a0but this award focuses on projects that have been\u00a0or are being undertaken by the local council to benefit the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Backed by mayor Sadiq Khan, the NLA awards highlight\u00a0a range of projects across the city that \u2018contribute to the creation of a more sustainable, civilised, and egalitarian London\u2019. That\u00a0includes schemes that focus on affordable housing, public realm and climate infrastructure. This is the first year that it has handed out an award for the best borough.<\/p>\n

So, the borough that claimed the top prize for 2025 was… Lambeth<\/strong>!\u00a0In its submission to the awards, Lambeth highlighted its SC1 health and life sciences centre on the South Bank, its \u00a31bn new homes programmes and its plans for the future of Waterloo rail stations and the surrounding area.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The borough\u2019s\u00a0Brixton Recreation Centre and Public Realm was also crowned the capital\u2019s best cultural project of the year. It was\u00a0celebrated\u00a0for its major transformation project, which brought new\u00a0workspaces, lighting and signage to the hub,\u00a0honouring\u00a0its legacy and role as a community centre.<\/p>\n

NLA\u2019s judges said: \u2018The Borough of the Year was selected for its strong focus on people and community engagement, underpinned by a clear and well-articulated strategy.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Borough\u2019s initiatives, from youth programmes to community-led projects, demonstrate meaningful collaboration and a real commitment to local needs.\u2019<\/p>\n

Claire Holland, the leader of Lambeth Council, said: \u2018We are delighted to have won this award because it acknowledges our commitment to engaging with our residents and partners on how we can shape change in our borough.<\/p>\n

\u2018We are a dynamic, ambitious borough where change is a constant, and we are determined to fully play our role shaping that future. Core to that determination is how we support inclusive growth that ensures that everyone here can contribute to and benefit from the many projects and developments across Lambeth.<\/p>\n

\u2018From building new homes or offices, creating new infrastructure, improving the local environment or tackling the climate crisis there are jobs, skills, homes and life benefits that must be shared equally across our communities.\u2019<\/p>\n
