{"id":60565,"date":"2025-04-29T15:40:12","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T15:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/60565\/"},"modified":"2025-04-29T15:40:12","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T15:40:12","slug":"womens-issues-being-sidelined-in-border-poll-debate-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/60565\/","title":{"rendered":"Women\u2019s issues being \u2018sidelined\u2019 in border poll debate \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">IRELAND\u2019S future must not be reduced to a border poll that ignores oppression and violence against women,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwci.ie\/images\/uploads\/CG_NWC0001_Assembly_Report_2025_A4_Booklet_24pp_DIGITAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nwci.ie\/images\/uploads\/CG_NWC0001_Assembly_Report_2025_A4_Booklet_24pp_DIGITAL.pdf\"> a new report has said.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">This was among the key demands published by the National Women\u2019s Council (NWC), an island-wide organisation championing women\u2019s voices across society. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Launched at Belfast City Hall on Tuesday, the report looked \u201cbeyond binary political debates\u201d about whether Northern Ireland should remain part of the UK or join with the Republic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Instead, it was argued that key issues for women on either side of the border &#8211; such as healthcare, childcare, economic justice and gender-based violence &#8211; were \u201csidelined\u201d in constitutional debates.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/there-are-more-gaelic-place-names-in-east-belfast-than-anywhere-else-former-pup-leader-on-embracing-the-history-of-the-east-WSENYCRHUJDJJEBEZGEEIX5BHQ\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"&#x2018;There are more Gaelic place names in east Belfast than anywhere else&#x2019;: Former PUP leader on embracing the history of the east\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/YSYPIOEAK5EBPCKUMQ4NLJMBJA.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/kneecap-deny-support-for-hamas-or-hezbollah-and-apologise-to-families-of-murdered-mps-T2PTNEXSZVEPJO6Z2UP3SSUNG4\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Kneecap deny support for Hamas or Hezbollah and apologise to families of murdered MPs\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/VP57WPS34ZPBPOLZ4BGYFFNJRM.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Launching a new report from the NWC at Belfast City Hall, pictured l-r; Alexa Moore, The Rainbow Project; Louise Bayliss, Society of Saint Vincent de Paul; Eileen Weir, Community Development Practitioner; Amanda Ferguson, Journalist; Lord Mayor Councillor Micky Murray; and Orla O&#x2019;Connor, National Women&#x2019;s Council.\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/NAJS5YWOVJBSRMEA3JLWAPBWLQ.jpeg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"600\"\/>Launching a new report from the NWC at Belfast City Hall, pictured l-r; Alexa Moore, The Rainbow Project; Louise Bayliss, Society of Saint Vincent de Paul; Eileen Weir, Community Development Practitioner; Amanda Ferguson, Journalist; Lord Mayor Councillor Micky Murray; and Orla O\u2019Connor, National Women\u2019s Council. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Citing the influence of partition as creating \u201ctwo deeply conservative states,\u201d the report said that gender-based violence became entrenched across the island \u201cwith patriarchal power structures reinforced by paramilitary groups, religious institutions or state actors keeping survivors silent and blocking their path to justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Despite progress in recent years, both jurisdictions were still found wanting in providing adequate protection and resources for survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence and coercive control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Economic structures and \u201cpoor state policies\u201d were also said to \u201ctrap women in abusive relationships\u201d through housing insecurity, financial dependence, and inadequate social protections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Sarah Mason, CEO of Women\u2019s Aid Northern Ireland, said contributing to the discussions as part of the Women\u2019s Assembly had been \u201ca powerful experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIn the north, we face some of the highest levels of femicide in Europe. We need to work together to change this and make the island a safe place for all women and girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Nuala Toman from Disability Action Northern Ireland also spoke of the challenges facing disabled women to live and work independently. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAs Ireland looks to the future, the voices of disabled women must be at the forefront of progress.
