Sir Keir declared today that Britain \u201cneeds to get closer\u201d to the Brussels and claimed the country’s Brexit<\/a> deal has \u201churt the economy\u201d.<\/p>\n

His comments came during a long speech to journalists after his Chancellor Rachel Reeves<\/a> faced accusations of misleading people over the true state of the nation’s finances, when it emerged no black hole existed despite her repeated claims otherwise.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a press conference today, Sir Keir said the UK \u201cneeds to get closer\u201d to Brussels on trade and insisted relations with Europe had been \u201creset\u201d.<\/p>\n

He urged the country to \u201cconfront the reality\u201d of Brexit\u2019s impact, and move \u201ctowards a closer relationship with the EU\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mr Starmer, who backed remaining in the EU, said the country needed to be \u201cgrown up\u201d about it.<\/p>\n

Pressed on whether Ms Reeves misled Britons before delivering her Budget, he said he would \u201cdefend [the budget] any day of the week\u201d and insisted it was fair and necessary.<\/p>\n

He also defended breaking his manifesto commitment not to raise taxes on working people, claiming his policies were \u201cgood for growth\u201d.<\/p>\n

During the 2024 General Election, Labour Politicians promised no less than 52 times not to raise National Insurance, Income Tax or VAT.<\/p>\n

They went on to launch a multi-billion tax raid in a budget this Autumn, which saw millions dragged into different tax brackets. The budget was branded a \u201cbudget for benefits street\u201d by Conservative Leader Kemi Badenoch.<\/p>\n

Mr Starmer repeatedly insisted neither he nor Ms Reeves misled the country, despite their claims that the UK faced a \u201cblack hole\u201d in its finances.<\/p>\n

He claimed he made the remarks after the Office for Budget Responsibility issued a productivity review that resulted in \u201c\u00a316bn less that we might have otherwise had\u201d.<\/p>\n
