{"id":60724,"date":"2025-04-29T17:05:16","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T17:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/60724\/"},"modified":"2025-04-29T17:05:16","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T17:05:16","slug":"sixth-generation-wire-maker-blames-brexit-for-shredding-its-business-brexit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/60724\/","title":{"rendered":"Sixth-generation wire-maker blames Brexit for shredding its business | Brexit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The head of a family-owned company that has made specialist wires and cables for six generations for clients ranging from naval vessels to film sets has blamed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/eu-referendum\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a> for shredding its business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Mark Ormiston, the owner of Ormiston Wire, said small businesses such as his had been flushed \u201cdown the toilet\u201d by the masterminds of Brexit who gave little thought to the real-life consequences for UK manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The London-based company\u2019s exports to the EU have halved since Britain left the EU, with the loss of the European market a huge blow for a small company with revenues of \u00a31.5m and limited growth prospects at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Make UK, the manufacturers\u2019 trade body, said figures showed the number of products being exported to the EU had been reduced by 80%, with small- and medium-sized businesses worst hit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cOur exports have literally halved. We are irrelevant to them. But if you multiply me by a million little companies doing these little things, it does add up to a significant amount of British exports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cIt\u2019s consequences, isn\u2019t it? When politicians have a great idea, they don\u2019t live with the consequences so they don\u2019t care. By the time it all kicks in they are dead or in the House of Lords.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Government insiders say they are determined to tear down as many barriers to trade caused by Brexit but with Starmer ruling out rejoining the single market and customs union the impact will be limited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">A report published in August by the House of Commons library showed that UK goods exports to the EU had not recovered to pre-Brexit levels. Exports to the bloc exceeded \u00a3170bn in 2017, 2018 and 2019 but have not done so in any calendar years since and were \u00a3153bn in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">A government spokesperson said: \u201cWe are working to reset the relationship with our European friends to tackle barriers to trade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\"> This article was amended on 7 September 2024.
