File Photo by Hugo Philpott\/UPI | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/News_Photos\/lp\/2f0bd0257fc6e1e66a151ac30225c566\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">License Photo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dec. 2 (UPI) &#8212; British Justice Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/topic\/David_Lammy\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"David Lammy\" class=\"tpstyle\" rel=\"noopener\">David Lammy<\/a> on Tuesday announced that trials in cases likely to carry sentences of fewer than three years in Britain and Wales will not go before a jury.<\/p>\n<p>Lammy, also the deputy prime minister, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cn5lxg2l0lqo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced the court reforms<\/a> that would see the creation of &#8220;swift courts&#8221; to have judges and magistrates handle such cases, while trials involving more serious crimes such as murder, robbery and rape will still be tried by jury.\n<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Britain&#8217;s Labor government claimed the government&#8217;s new system would process cases a fifth faster than trials empaneled by a jury.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Victims have waited long enough,&#8221; Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DavidLammy\/status\/1995873831341490446\" target=\"_blank\">posted on X<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>The reform to Britain&#8217;s jury mechanism removes a defendant&#8217;s legal right to request a jury trial in cases able to be judged by a magistrate in its new judge-only process.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are taking the bold decisions needed to fix the emergency in our courts and secure swifter justice for victims,&#8221; he stated.<\/p>\n<p>According to Lammy, the legal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/live\/2025\/dec\/02\/david-lammy-courts-law-starmer-labour-reeves-budget-obr-uk-politics-live-news-updates?filterKeyEvents=false&amp;page=with:block-692ee5858f083ad26c47a1c3#block-692ee5858f083ad26c47a1c3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">changes were expected<\/a> to be permanent.<\/p>\n<p>In June, Britain&#8217;s attorney general unveiled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/2005\/06\/21\/Britain-wants-some-trials-to-be-judge-only\/17641119361888\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plans to abolish juries<\/a> in favor of judges for complex and expensive fraud trials.\n<\/p>\n<p>The British Justice Ministry called Tuesday&#8217;s revelation a &#8220;bold reform&#8221; and claimed it puts victims &#8220;front and center&#8221; of the the country&#8217;s justice system.<\/p>\n<p>Lammy said Britain&#8217;s Crown Court projects a case load extending 100,000 in the next three years with a current backlog nearing 80,000 pending court trials.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Lammy &#8212; also British justice secretary &#8212; revealed that reforms will arrive with a more than $725 investment in &#8220;specialist victim support.&#8221; Lammy claimed it&#8217;s the &#8220;biggest funding package ever&#8221; for such systemic legal changes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From counseling to court advice, this lifeline will help survivors see cases through, get convictions, and put dangerous criminals behind bars,&#8221; he wrote on social media.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"David Lammy, Britain&#8217;s current deputy prime minister, pictured March 2019 in London.
