Barry Owen was the co-founder of city-based property consultancy firm Mason Owen, which he established with Geoff Mason in 1967.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">He died at the age of 82 in April. Ahead of construction beginning on the latest Maggie\u2019s Cancer Centre on the site of the old <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/royal-liverpool-hospital\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Royal Liverpool University HospitalLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Liverpool University Hospital<\/a> next year, it has been confirmed the garden in the grounds of the new facility will be named in Mr Owen\u2019s honour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Mr Owen\u2019s wife, Susanne said: \u201cThis will be a very special place that I\u2019m sure people will treasure.\u201d The new Maggie\u2019s will be the 29th and the third funded by the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/scouse-millionaire-lived-caravan-no-24431633\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Steve MorganLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Steve Morgan<\/a> Foundation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Barry Owen was born in Stockport on April 29, 1942, to parents who were both from Liverpool. The family returned to the city after WWII and Mr Owen attended <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/birkenhead\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birkenhead<\/a> School during the 1950s, before studying economics and economic history at the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/university-of-liverpool\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Liverpool<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">He was awarded an OBE in 2009 for services to business and charity in Liverpool and was also a fellow of Liverpool John Moores University. Mr Owen took great solace from the garden at his family home near Chester in the latter stages of his own cancer journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Work on the new Maggie\u2019s centre, to be built at the junction of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/prescot\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Prescot<\/a> Street and Daulby Street in Liverpool, is set to begin in March next year. Planning permission for the \u00a35m centre was granted by the city council in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Mrs Owen said: \u201cBarry took such great comfort from walking in our garden and sitting amidst the plants and flowers. He would be so pleased to think that others coping with the impact of cancer could do likewise, particularly in the city he loved so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">The new Maggie\u2019s will be the 29th and the third funded by the Steve Morgan Foundation, with others on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/wirral\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Wirral<\/a> and in north Wales to have benefitted from the Redrow founder\u2019s personal charity.
