But there will also be a somber note as Steinmeier becomes the first German head of state to make a formal state visit to Britain in 27 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">On Friday, the couple will visit Coventry Cathedral to commemorate the Nazi bombing of the city, which killed at least 568 people and destroyed or damaged more than half of its homes on the night of Nov. 14, 1940. It was the single most concentrated attack on a British city during World War II.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Germany has apologized more than once for the Nazi regime\u2019s atrocities. And during his <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/king-charles-iii-state-visit-germany-coronation-c21bd1238a4fbb2ec17bfef0c5df974f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">own state visit to Germany in 2023,<\/a> Charles acknowledged the devastation caused by the war, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/king-charles-germany-britain-royal-dbb9b0d1968344683e9072c46162cee7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laying a wreath<\/a> at the remains of St. Nikolai Church in Hamburg to commemorate the more than 30,000 people who were killed during the Allied bombing of the city in July 1943.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIt\u2019s a particularly poignant time in British and German history, so the fact that this is being factored into the state visit clearly is important to both sides,\u201d said Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty Magazine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">While state visits <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/king-coronation-charles-camilla-a799d9bc8baf93778aff362fcde0c80d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are hosted by the king,<\/a> they are scheduled at the request of the elected government to reward friends \u2014 and sometimes nudge reluctant partners \u2014 with the red carpet treatment only Britain\u2019s royal family can provide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">So there will be the glittering tiaras, displays of military precision and a sumptuous banquet served on 200-year-old silver. There&#8217;s also a huge Christmas tree in St. George&#8217;s Hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">But it\u2019s a spectacle with a purpose.
