The Bonnat-Helleu Museum, known as the “Little Louvre”, welcomed visitors again on November 27, 2025, after nearly 14 years of restoration. The upgrade has doubled the exhibition space, modernised the historic building and brought thousands of works back on display, marking a major cultural moment for southwest France.

The museum first opened in 1891 and carries the legacy of painters whose bequests between 1922 and 2011 built the foundation of its collection. Additional donations in 1936 and 1992 expanded the range. It closed in 2011 after the building no longer met safety and accessibility standards, leading to a full redevelopment by French architecture firm BLP.

The renovation, with a budget of about EUR 29 million, restored the 19th-century structure designed by Charles Planckaert. The project expanded the galleries and updated environmental controls and accessibility features. A neighbouring school building was converted into a new wing, adding room for exhibitions, a café and office space.

Another EUR 4 million was allocated to restore 1,300 artworks. According to The Art Newspaper, “Another EUR 4 million was spent on restoring 1,300 works. While Jean-Dominique Ingres’s La Baigneuse has regained its brilliance, there have also been discoveries, including autographs in El Greco paintings and pentimenti and overpaintings in Simon Vouet’s Roman Charity (1620s).”

Visitors now have access to around 7,000 works, including pieces by Rembrandt, Rubens, Goya and Michelangelo. The museum also features 2,500 works on long-term loan from the Louvre. Key elements of the restored building include Giandomenico Facchina’s mosaic floors and the glass-roofed central courtyard.

Bayonne’s early municipal collection dates back to the 1830s, when the city began acquiring works from emerging local artists such as Léon Bonnat and Achille Zo, later supplemented by State contributions.

The museum will remain open throughout the year except on Tuesdays, during the Bayonne Festival, and on major holidays including January 1, May 1 and December 25. Ticket prices follow a seasonal structure, with winter admission set at EUR 9 for adults and EUR 6 for reduced or group entry. During peak season, adult tickets cost EUR 11, while reduced and group rates are EUR 8.

The reopening brings one of France’s significant Old Masters collections back to public view, positioning Bayonne once again as a key stop for art enthusiasts.

Bayonne’s flagship art museum has reopened after one of France’s longest cultural renovation projects.
