That\u2019s how Steve Diggle tells it anyway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">He was at Manchester\u2019s Lesser Free Trade Hall the night the Sex Pistols exploded onto the stage playing to around 30 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">It was a display unlike anything that had come before it. But it\u2019s become a bit of a joke that everyone claims they were there that night of Friday June 4, 1976.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">In fact, the London punks had been brought there by art college students Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1_250322SexPistols2JPG.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks with a poster for the later 1976 Sex Pistols gig at the Lesser Free Trade Hall<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">After seeing the band in London, they swiftly formed Buzzcocks, and convinced the Pistols\u2019 manager Malcolm McLaren to let them support the band in Manchester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">It was agreed, but Howard and Pete couldn\u2019t muster a rhythm section in time so put an advert in the New Manchester Review asking for a bassist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u2018BASS PLAYER NEEDED\u2019 read a similar ad in the Manchester Evening News, seen by Steve Diggle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">He wasn\u2019t really a bassist &#8211; just the owner of a stolen one. But he was desperate to be in a band no matter what, so phoned the number and the bloke on the other end agreed they should \u201cwrite some songs and smash some guitars\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Steve arranged to meet him outside the Free Trade Hall in town on a Friday in June and take him to Cox\u2019s Bar, on Windmill Street, where you could get \u201ca real pint of Boddingtons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">But while he was waiting outside he was ushered inside by the Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren who said the men he was waiting for were inside.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/17184_0.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The Sex Pistols played twice at Manchester&#8217;s Lesser Free Trade Hall. Pictured is the band and Peter Hook&#8217;s ticket from that fabled gig(Image: Omega Auctions)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">He introduced him to Pete Shelley, who was inside collecting tickets, and his pal Howard Devoto. \u201cThis is your new bass player,\u201d said Malcolm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">The misunderstanding changed the course of all of their lives. Steve joined Buzzcocks that night and stayed to watch the Pistols play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cI think them other two guys we were supposed to meet might still be waiting outside the Free Trade Hall now,\u201d Steve jokes now, 50 years on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cThat night was a game changer massively. It\u2019s like when Bob Dylan went electric. That&#8217;s how important it was that night &#8211; it changed people&#8217;s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Also lurking in the shadows of the Pistols gig that night was Morrissey, Mark E. Smith Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">But in truth, Steve would never have been there if his dad hadn\u2019t nicked that bass guitar off the back of a lorry &#8211; a move he says was \u201cthe best thing he ever did for me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_PCR_MEN_07122018MEN_buzzcocks-spiral-scra.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The Spiral Scratch EP, featuring the classic Buzzcocks line-up of (left to right) John Maher, Steve Diggle, Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto(Image: .)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">The lads met a few days later at Howard\u2019s bedsit on Lower Broughton Road, in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/salford\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Salford<\/a>. Steve showed them his songs including Fast Cars &#8211; an ode to the purveyors of automotive phallic symbols.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">That first rehearsal, played through a tiny amp \u201csounded terrible\u201d, but Steve says \u201ca terrible beauty was born\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cYou\u2019ve got to remember nobody was doing anything like that,\u201d he says. \u201cThrough one little amp. It was the 70s and everyone was doing quadraphonic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cThis thing came together out of nowhere and it worked. Beyond the proficiency of playing, there was something powerful there. More than we realised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">A few weeks later, the newly-formed Buzzcocks &#8211; now with drummer John Maher &#8211; brought the Sex Pistols back to Manchester. They opened the gig which was again at the Lesser Free Trade Hall and attended this time by Tony Wilson and Ian Curtis among others.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_Portrait-of-Buzzcocks-frontman-Steve-Diggle.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Steve Diggle outside what was the Free Trade Hall(Image: Kenny Brown | Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Buzzcocks &#8211; with their observational, political, often humorous lyrics &#8211; have been credited with inventing an entirely new genre of music. They were beloved by Kurt Cobain, who invited them to support Nirvana on their 1994 European tour. And their famous fans include Pearl Jam\u2019s Eddie Vedder, the Manic Street Preachers, Ramones and Green Day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">But despite their worldwide renown, Steve feels they are frequently overlooked in the conversation about Manchester music lore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cWe brought the Sex Pistols when they were unknown to the Free Trade Hall. And they get the credit and we don\u2019t and we\u2019re born and bred in Manchester,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cThat night changed people\u2019s lives about punk. It changed the whole consciousness about what music was doing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cPete and Howard brought the f***in Sex Pistols from London and it was Buzzcocks what brought them and Buzzcocks that started the indie scene.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_Photo-of-Steve-DIGGLE-and-BUZZCOCKS-and-Steve-GARVEY-and-Pete-SHELLEY.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>John Maher, Steve Diggle, Pete Shelley, Steve Garvey of Buzzcocks(Image: Redferns)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cNobody had seen anything like the Buzzcocks. People say to us \u2018you were the blueprint for indie\u2019 because you can hear a lot of that indie sound in what we were doing in 76.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cThey should put the f*****g Buzzcocks up there, that\u2019s far more important in a lot of ways. I know how important that night was and how important Buzzcocks were to Manchester.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">He adds: \u201cAll them other Manchester bands of Tony Wilson&#8217;s &#8211; it changed because of us playing that night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">A few months after those vital gigs, Buzzcocks released Spiral Scratch &#8211; an EP often credited with inventing indie music. But the title of their first single caused a problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cWe said Orgasm Addict would be the first single. When it went to the pressing plant, they went on strike and said: \u2018We&#8217;re not pressing this filth\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cThe release date was put back three weeks while they negotiated with the f***ing pressing plant that it was poetry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1764782001_50_0_Portrait-of-Buzzcocks-frontman-Steve-Diggle.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Steve Diggle today(Image: Kenny Brown | Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">That song &#8211; mild by modern pop music standards but groundbreaking at the time &#8211; was banned by the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/bbc\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cWe thought \u2018everybody knows what an orgasm is, let\u2019s put it on the table\u2019,\u201d says Steve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cThat kind of thing came from William Burroughs books, Naked Lunch, that kind of school of things. It was subversive really.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cThe line: \u2018You even made it with the lady who puts the little plastic robins on the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/christmas\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Christmas<\/a> cakes\u2019 came from Howard Devoto working in a factory where a woman did that job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">With their angular, distorted sound, avant garde, angry and often humorous lyrics &#8211; Buzzcocks had something special.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">With Steve having spent his formative years on some of Manchester\u2019s toughest streets, it\u2019s perhaps unsurprising that his vocal style was on the snarling, angry side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">But he says he\u2019s an introvert at heart and is most proud of the cerebral lyrics on songs like Why She\u2019s a Girl From the Chainstore &#8211; a song that references sociologist Basil Bernstein.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_Band-on-the-Wall.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Buzzcocks perform at Band on the Wall in the late 1970s(Image: Kevin Cummins | Band on the Wall Archive)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">&#8220;A lot of my songs were political. Harmony In My Head&#8217;s is about self rule. The Pistols were singing \u2018anarchy in the UK\u2019 I was saying you\u2019ve got to rule yourself, not the government. You need to find yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">The cerebral musings about class, heartache and inequality might not grab the attention of the masses, but Buzzcocks have most certainly enjoyed mainstream success. The catchy pop punk power of singles Everybody\u2019s Happy Nowadays and What Do I Get? have seen them included in films, including Shrek, and even on a McDonald\u2019s advert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">That\u2019s a move Steve &#8211; a devout vegetarian &#8211; was never happy with, but he\u2019s made his peace with it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Their popularity continues to this day, with the band set to embark on a 50th anniversary tour next year. A new album has been recorded and Steve is still writing songs all the time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_Pete-Shelley-death.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Steve Diggle and Pete Shelley perform during the MOJO Honours List launch in December 2018(Image: PA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">But performing without Pete &#8211; who died in 2018 &#8211; has always been bittersweet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cWe spent 43 years together,\u201d says Steve. \u201cWe were there from day one, me and Pete.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cWe had a good musical exchange but also we were just really close. Me and him would go to the pub when we had band meetings and rehearsals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cWe used to have an office at 50 <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/newton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Newton<\/a> Street. We\u2019d have our meetings in the Wagon and Horses across the street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cWe used to discuss everything me and Pete, all kinds of things. The humorous drunken wit. Heavy stuff. He was quite scientific and I loved the literature. I used to say I\u2019m the illogical one, he\u2019s the logical one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cWe went through hell and high water and an amazing career together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Just before he died, Pete told Steve he was ready to retire, but was told: \u201cdon\u2019t be silly, we\u2019ve got a lot to do\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cHe said \u2018I\u2019m getting tired Steve, you carry on. I said: \u2018you\u2019re not going anywhere.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1764782004_893_0_Portrait-of-Buzzcocks-frontman-Steve-Diggle.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Steve Diggle(Image: Kenny Brown | Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cAbout two days later I got the phone call that he\u2019d died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cAfter he died, which was heartbreaking, we had the Royal Albert Hall booked. So we made it a memorial night for Pete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">In Pete\u2019s absence, Steve has strived to make new music to avoid \u201cbecoming a Buzzcocks tribute band\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">The new album, he says, is far more outward looking than his usual introspective style with lyrics about everything from reality television to lives lost at war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cA lot of these punk bands rely on the past. But I don&#8217;t have to,\u201d he says. \u201cThis new album\u2019s hopefully full of surprises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cSome people look at these albums and go, \u2018Oh, it doesn&#8217;t sound like Buzzcocks\u2019.
