\u201cUgly,\u201d \u201cstupid,\u201d \u201cpiggy\u201d \u2013 Trump intensifies hostility towards female reporters\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u201cHall of Shame\u201d represents the latest escalation in Donald Trump’s long-standing attacks on the US media. It follows lawsuits against The Wall Street Journal<\/a> and\u00a0The New York Times<\/a>, as well as out-of-court settlements with media groups\u00a0Disney<\/a> and\u00a0Paramount<\/a>. The US president is known for reacting aggressively and insultingly when journalists \u2014 especially women \u2014 ask critical questions or do not report according to his views.<\/p>\n

He has sharply attacked several female journalists in recent weeks: in mid-November, he\u00a0shouted<\/a> at\u00a0Bloomberg reporter Catherine Lucey, saying, \u201cQuiet! Quiet, piggy!\u201d Lucey had asked Trump about recently released documents related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt considers this tone appropriate and\u00a0defended Trump’s statement<\/a> during a press conference, saying that the president \u201ccalls out fake news when he sees it and gets frustrated with reporters who spread false information.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

On November 26, Trump\u00a0insulted a\u00a0New York Times correspondent<\/a> as a \u201cthird-rate reporter who is ugly inside and out.\u201d The next day, he\u00a0asked\u00a0CBS journalist Nancy Cordes<\/a> if she was \u201ca stupid person.\u201d She had asked questions about the government’s vetting of Afghans who were allowed to enter the US and granted asylum after the fall of Kabul in 2021.<\/p>\n

Trump uses authoritarian means to weaken the press<\/strong><\/p>\n

Insulting and slandering journalists are only part of Trump’s attacks on the press. His administration is deliberately using instruments of state power to harm unwelcome media outlets \u2014 a strategy familiar to\u00a0authoritarian regimes<\/a>. For example, the\u00a0US Congress cut billions in government funding<\/a> to\u00a0National Public Radio (NPR) and the\u00a0Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)\u00a0at his urging.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump also radically cut funding for the foreign broadcasters\u00a0Voice of America (VOA) and\u00a0Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty.
