Nato general warns on cyber-threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Moscow may be helping ransomware gangs wreak havoc on companies like Marks &amp; Spencer and Jaguar Land Rover as it steps up hybrid attacks on Europe, Nato\u2019s head of cyber operations has warned.<\/p>\n<p>Brigadier General \u00dcmit Ersoy said the alliance was already at war with Russia \u201con a daily basis\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an ongoing war, without naming it as a war,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin has spent years developing a \u201cvery successful\u201d offensive cyber-capability, which has forced the 32 nation alliance to evolve to defend itself.<\/p>\n<p>The general, who is the chief of Shape\u2019s Cyberspace Operations Centre, said: \u201cEach day is a challenge,\u201d and added that the threat from Russia and others was so advanced that it kept him awake every night.<\/p>\n<p>President Putin warned on Tuesday that Russia was \u201cready right now\u201d to fight a war with Europe as tensions surrounding a peace deal with Ukraine spiralled.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chief of the General Staff of Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov walk at the command post of the Russian forces &quot;West&quot; grouping.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/\/c43c1643-e9a9-48f1-a350-2183dc44f65e.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>President Putin with Valery Gerasimov, the head of Russia\u2019s armed forces, last week<\/p>\n<p>REUTERS<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Ersoy, speaking as Nato carried out major cyberwar games this week, told The Times\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/shows.acast.com\/times-war\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The General and The Journalist<\/a> podcast that Russian state involvement in the corporate attacks has been investigated and is a serious concern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cTo what extent those criminals are co-ordinating, collaborating or communicating with those state actors, this is something we need to explore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cI believe that\u2019s possible. I wouldn\u2019t be surprised \u2014 obviously we are talking about a rogue regime. Just because we find it immoral doesn\u2019t mean they would refrain from working with criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Russia\u2019s increased aggression towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/nato\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nato<\/a> nations this year has coincided with a string of successful online criminal attacks on big European companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Britain\u2019s biggest carmaker, JLR, was forced to close its factories for five weeks after a hack in August that was estimated to have cost the UK economy almost \u00a32 billion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/business\/companies-markets\/article\/jaguar-land-rover-cyber-attack-200m-loss-wrtz589gc\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Jaguar Land Rover reveals devastating impact of cyberattack<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">A ransomware attack in September knocked out check-in systems at Heathrow airport, causing hundreds of flight cancellations and chaos for days. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Ersoy said: \u201cAs each day goes by, the threat picture is evolving and changing. The threats from state actors, non-state actors or those supported by some states are getting more sophisticated and the techniques and tactics used are progressing in a massive way. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cIt is much more demanding than two or three years back. I would say we are not even in the same place compared to six months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The general, who has held the key post since October 2023, added: \u201cEach day of mine is harder than the previous day. So if you ask me, what was your hardest moment? It is now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Cyberattacks have long been a tool in Russia\u2019s campaign of hybrid war, which intentionally exists just below the threshold of armed conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">It is known as the Gerasimov doctrine, named after the long serving and Valery Gerasimov, the head of Russia\u2019s armed forces, who devised it a decade ago. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Chief of the General Staff of Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov attending a meeting.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/\/cd15d7e4-a4cf-4aae-a2d5-9cd6c76576f2.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Gerasimov, the man behind the doctrine<\/p>\n<p>SPUTNIK\/GAVRIIL GRIGOROV\/KREMLIN\/REUTERS<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">In the past months, the Kremlin has stepped up its provocations. flying suicide drones and MiG fighter jets into Nato airspace. Cyber is now being fused with other tactics, according to Ersoy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He said: \u201cThe Gerasimov doctrine is not new. We are just observing how perfectly they are implementing that doctrine. The unjust invasion of Ukraine by Russia also laid down that Russia is capable of executing such actions in close co-ordination with other domains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cCyberspace is not something that you can achieve in a blink of the eye. It means that they have worked on the subject, planned, and prepared themselves. To make that happen, a huge organisation is required, and that capacity obviously may come with different threats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">What was his greatest fear? Ersoy said: \u201cI have been here some time. Frankly ever since I was assigned here, none of the nights I have gone to bed I\u2019ve felt comfortable or ready to sleep. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThe biggest fear is not having matured enough to understand what\u2019s happening. We are evolving very fast and nations are investing a lot.
