{"id":610403,"date":"2025-12-03T22:34:38","date_gmt":"2025-12-03T22:34:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/610403\/"},"modified":"2025-12-03T22:34:38","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T22:34:38","slug":"spain-wont-use-bulk-of-eu-recovery-fund-loans-as-economy-growing-fast-minister-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/610403\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain won&#8217;t use bulk of EU recovery fund loans as economy growing fast, minister says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">By Caroline Stauffer<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">TORONTO, Dec 3 (Reuters) &#8211; Spain will use only about a quarter of European Union loans meant to help EU members recover from the 2020-21 \u200bpandemic as its fast-growing economy can issue debt without EU curbs and deadlines, \u200cits economy minister told Reuters on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">While Spain has been spared any noticeable direct impact from U.S. President Donald \u200cTrump&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/live\/trump-tariffs-live-updates-trump-vows-export-curbs-india-hike-on-deck-china-and-canada-envoys-visit-us-200619355.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:tariffs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tariffs<\/a> on the EU, it is still working to diversify trade and investment relationships, Carlos Cuerpo said during a visit to Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Countries including Italy, Poland and Spain have yet to use EU recovery funds that include grants and loans and must be implemented by August 2026, subject \u2060to EU regulations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Spain was one \u200cof the main recipients and had been due to receive around 160 billion euros ($187 billion) &#8211; roughly half in grants and half in loans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">&#8220;Financially, there \u200dis no advantage for us to go for those loans, because we can do it ourselves with our own issuance of debt,&#8221; Cuerpo said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Spain&#8217;s economy has by far outgrown its European peers in the past two \u200byears, diminishing its public debt burden as a share of GDP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">He said Spain had \u200cfocused on the direct EU transfers to boost sectors including green energy, and might ultimately spend just around 25% of the loans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">&#8220;We will be closing these negotiations with the (European)Commission in the next few days, but it will be around that figure, yes, maybe a bit higher,&#8221; Cuerpo said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Since the exposure of Spanish exports to the U.S. market is lower than that \u2060of other EU partners, Cuerpo said, &#8220;there is no significant \u200bimpact&#8221; at the macroeconomic level from the U.S. tariffs, \u200bbut did not rule out that a &#8220;potential impact might come from an indirect channel, from France, from Germany&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The EU signed a deal with Trump involving \u200da baseline tariff of \u206015% on most EU goods.
