King Charles and Queen Camilla are hosting German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and First Lady Elke B\u00fcdenbender for a state banquet at Windsor Castle this evening. Per tradition, that means the British royals will be decked out in all their finest jewels, gowns, royal orders, and other fineries for the formal gala.<\/p>\n

Never one to shy away from showstopping gems, Queen Camilla arrived in the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Known to be a favorite of the late Queen Elizabeth<\/a>, the precious diadem was originally \u201ca wedding present\u2026to the Duchess of York, later Queen Mary, in 1893,\u201d according to the Royal Collection. \u201cIn November 1947 Queen Mary gave the tiara as a wedding present to her grand-daughter, Princess Elizabeth.\u201d The headpiece gets its name from the committee of women who presented it to the then-Princess Mary of Teck upon her marriage to the Duke of York in 1893. Camilla has worn the sparkler<\/a> for a few occasions, including for the annual reception in honor of the Diplomatic Corps at Buckingham Palace in 2023.<\/p>\n Camilla also wore a green lace evening gown by Fiona Clare.<\/p>\n Camilla is known to have a few favorite tiaras<\/a>. For the last two state visits, hosting U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump<\/a> in September and French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron<\/a> in July, the Queen has worn the same sparkler: the Belgian Sapphire Tiara. She first wore the diadem at the state banquet for President Cyril Ramaphosa<\/a> of the Republic of South Africa in November 2022. But Camilla has pulled out some surprises lately, including Princess Eugenie\u2019s wedding tiara, the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara<\/a>, for a diplomatic reception last month.<\/p>\n Earlier in the day, the Queen joined King Charles to greet Germany\u2019s first couple outside of Windsor Castle for a series of welcome events, while wearing a cobalt blue Anna Valentine coat dress to go with Prince Albert\u2019s Diamond and Sapphire Brooch<\/a>, a poignant choice. The bauble was a wedding present<\/a> from Albert, who hailed from the principality of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in Bavaria in present-day Germany, to his bride, Queen Victoria, in 1840.<\/p>\n The Queen previously wore the same brooch when visiting Germany in 2023.<\/p>\n This will be the first state visit to the United Kingdom by a German president in 27 years and the fifth since 1958. The most recent visit took place in December 1998, when President Roman Herzog became the first head of state to visit Windsor Castle following the 1992 fire.
