{"id":61078,"date":"2025-04-29T20:13:15","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T20:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/61078\/"},"modified":"2025-04-29T20:13:15","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T20:13:15","slug":"manfred-weber-secures-second-term-atop-europes-most-powerful-party-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/61078\/","title":{"rendered":"Manfred Weber secures second term atop Europe\u2019s most powerful party \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second-biggest delegation, the Poles, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/polish-epp-german-leader-manfred-weber-lawmakers-european-union-delegation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> they will not continue to play ball if that means losing the socialists and liberals, the EPP\u2019s centrist allies.<\/p>\n<p>The party leadership has argued they will not sacrifice their policy objectives for the sake of appeasing the socialists \u2014 and if the far-right vote in favor of EPP\u2019s proposals, so be it. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A similar argument was made in the presidency\u2019s congress declaration, which insists the party should be pragmatic on who it works with to deliver \u201cbalanced\u201d solutions and argues the EPP \u201cis the bridge builder\u201d among political families, according to a draft obtained by POLITICO.<\/p>\n<p>Having led the party in the European Parliament since 2014, Weber in 2019 campaigned for the top job of European Commission president, though he was ultimately dismissed by heads of government in favor of Ursula von der Leyen, then Germany\u2019s defense minister.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of vying to snatch the Parliament\u2019s presidency, currently held by Roberta Metsola, Weber opted for the post of party president.
