(WKYT) &#8211; Mayor Randall Weddle cancelled a special London city council meeting Wednesday over concerns about violating state open meeting laws due to overcrowding, sparking a heated confrontation in the chambers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIn the opinion of the city attorney and KLC, we are beyond capacity, and we are required to give adequate seating,\u201d Weddle said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The cancelled meeting was scheduled to address ordinances on transparency and workers\u2019 pay, according to meeting agendas. The session came after a contentious regularly scheduled meeting on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Following the mayor\u2019s announcement, verbal disagreements erupted between Weddle and council members. Councilman Judd Weaver challenged the mayor\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI appeal your decision,\u201d Weaver said. \u201cThe meeting is not in session so you have no power right now,\u201d Weddle said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The dispute escalated when the mayor and council members began shouting at each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cYou\u2019re a liar. You have spun this around,\u201d Weaver said. The mayor responded, \u201cYou\u2019re a liar Judd. That\u2019s why you lost the election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">During the chaos, fire alarms activated in the council chambers. Video obtained by WKYT shows fire alarms blaring as council members remained seated while police surrounded them and the city\u2019s fire chief ordered everyone to evacuate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cEveryone has to get out,\u201d fire officials said as the fire alarms continued to sound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Weddle said he cancelled the meeting because he did not feel comfortable proceeding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cAt this point, we do not feel comfortable, as the city\u2019s mayor, to be able to hear inside this meeting to proceed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Following the incident, Weddle defended the city\u2019s reputation despite the political turmoil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cDon\u2019t let the politics that you are witnessing judge what you think of London, because this is politics.
