Compared with 2014, R&amp;D expenditure grew by 62.2% from \u20ac248.6 billion, showing a steady rise in the last decade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\"><a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:R_%26_D_intensity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R&amp;D intensity<\/a>, defined as <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Gross_domestic_expenditure_on_R_%26_D_(GERD)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R&amp;D expenditure<\/a> as a percentage of <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Gross_domestic_product_(GDP)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GDP<\/a>, remained stable at 2.2%, similar to previous years. Between 2014 and 2024, R&amp;D intensity in the EU increased by 0.1 <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Percentage_point\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">percentage points<\/a> (pp).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">Between 2014 and 2024, R&amp;D intensity increased in 19 EU countries, with the largest increases recorded in Belgium (+1.0 pp), Greece (+0.7 pp) and Estonia and Croatia (+0.6 pp each).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">In 2024, 6 EU countries registered an R&amp;D intensity equal to or higher than 3%, the EU target set by the European Council for the EU. The highest R&amp;D intensity was recorded in Sweden (3.6%), Belgium (3.4%), Austria (3.3%) and Finland (3.2%), followed by Germany (3.1%) and Denmark (3.0%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/documents\/4187653\/22643927\/gross-domestic-expenditure-2014-2024.jpg\/0a5bab33-739f-5c7f-d2a2-3b0397bcd065?t=1764588409853\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gross domestic expenditure on R&amp;D, 2014 and 2024 (% of the GDP). It represented 66.5% of EU R&amp;D spending, totalling \u20ac268.1 billion. It was followed by the higher education sector (\u20ac86.1 billion; 21.4%), the government sector (\u20ac43.5 billion; 10.8%), and the private non-profit sector (\u20ac5.4 billion; 1.3%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/documents\/4187653\/22643927\/r%26d-expenditure-sector-2024.jpg\/f891917c-7cb0-0856-1da1-d577719fe7fe?t=1764588409335\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"R&amp;D expenditure in the EU, by sector, 2024 (\u20ac billion and % of R&amp;D expenditure).
