{"id":611754,"date":"2025-12-04T13:47:23","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T13:47:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/611754\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T13:47:23","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T13:47:23","slug":"eurovision-members-to-discuss-voting-interference-rule-changes-and-potential-israel-ban-world-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/611754\/","title":{"rendered":"Eurovision members to discuss voting &#8216;interference&#8217; rule changes &#8211; and potential Israel ban | World News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) will meet today to discuss Israel&#8217;s involvement in next year&#8217;s Eurovision Song Contest.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/eurovision-6610\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eurovision&#8217;s<\/a> <\/strong>organisers&#8217; headquarters in Geneva will address the new rules intended to stop governments and third parties from disproportionately influencing voting.<\/p>\n<p>Should members not be convinced about the new rules, there may be a vote on <a href=\"http:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/israel-5981\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Israel<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s participation in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>In November, the EBU changed the voting system for the song contest over <a href=\"http:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/eurovision-to-change-voting-rules-after-claims-of-israeli-government-interference-13473662\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>allegations of &#8220;interference&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> from the Israeli government.<\/p>\n<p>That came after Israeli singer Yuval Raphael received the largest number of votes from the public in this year&#8217;s contest, ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/eurovision-2025-austria-wins-eurovision-as-uk-avoids-dreaded-nul-points-13370040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>finishing as runner-up to Austria&#8217;s entry<\/strong><\/a> after the jury votes were counted.<\/p>\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/download-app\" target=\"blank\" data-tracking-label=\"ui-app-promo-download-link\" class=\"ui-app-promo sdc-article-widget\" data-type=\"\" data-component-name=\"ui-app-promo\" data-testid=\"app-promo\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the final in May, Irish broadcaster RTE requested a breakdown in voting numbers from the EBU, while Spain&#8217;s public broadcaster, Radio Television Espanola, called for a &#8220;complete review&#8221; of the voting system to avoid &#8220;external interference&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Dutch public broadcaster AVROTROS added in September that<strong> <\/strong>there had been &#8220;proven interference by the Israeli government during the last edition of the Song Contest, with the event being used as a political instrument&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Their statement did not elaborate on the means of &#8220;interference&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" loading=\"lazy\" intrinsicsize=\"768x432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/skynews-eden-golan-israel_7017103.jpg\"   alt=\"Israel has not commented on accusations of interference in voting. File pic: AP<\/p>\n<p><strong>Israeli broadcaster still preparing entry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Israel has not commented on the accusations regarding voting for the contest, which stresses its political neutrality, but it has frequently claimed that it faces a global smear campaign.<\/p>\n<p>KAN, the Israeli public broadcaster, also said it is preparing for next year&#8217;s Eurovision content.<\/p>\n<p>It added it will present its position on possible disqualification at the meeting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boycotts threatened over war in Gaza<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It comes after Slovenia and broadcasters from <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/spain-votes-to-boycott-eurovision-if-israel-competes-13432081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Spain<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/netherlands-joins-ireland-in-threatening-to-boycott-eurovision-2026-if-israel-takes-part-13429291\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the Netherlands<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/ireland-will-not-participate-in-eurovision-if-israel-is-allowed-to-take-part-13428743\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ireland<\/strong><\/a> and Iceland issued statements earlier this year saying they would consider <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/could-eurovision-boycotts-over-israel-lead-to-a-competition-crisis-13433435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>boycotting the contest<\/strong><\/a> next year if Israel was allowed to enter over <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/israel-hamas-war-10864\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the war in Gaza<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In September, officials from the EBU announced <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/why-emergency-eurovision-vote-on-israel-might-not-stop-a-broadcast-boycott-13441717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>plans for an emergency vote<\/strong><\/a> on Israel&#8217;s participation, with president Delphine Ernotte-Cunci saying &#8220;given that the union has never faced a divisive situation like this before&#8221;.
