Dec. 4 marks the start of the annual Geminid meteor shower, as Earth passes through the trail of debris shed by the strange blue asteroid 3200 Phaethon, triggering what promises to be one of the most spectacular shooting star displays of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34921-geminid-meteor-shower-guide.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34921-geminid-meteor-shower-guide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geminid meteor shower<\/a> is active from Dec. 4 to Dec. 20 and hits peak activity overnight on Dec. 13-14, when up to 150 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/meteor-showers-shooting-stars.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/meteor-showers-shooting-stars.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meteors<\/a> may be seen brightening the night sky each hour under perfect conditions, according to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/meteor-showers\/meteor-shower-calendar\/#Geminids\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/meteor-showers\/meteor-shower-calendar\/#Geminids\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"noopener\">American Meteor Society<\/a>. NASA, meanwhile, estimates that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/meteors-meteorites\/geminids\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/meteors-meteorites\/geminids\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"noopener\">40 to 50 meteors<\/a> may be visible each hour around the point of peak activity.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"7a81e443-c570-44aa-9468-9156c7ed55f9-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Shooting stars appear when shreds of space debris ranging in size from a grain of sand to a small asteroid collide with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a> while travelling at tens of thousands of miles per hour, only to burn up in a fiery naked-eye display as they&#8217;re overwhelmed by the friction of atmospheric entry.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"4091f3e4-5598-4141-95fc-5dfcf614fe83\">Geminid meteors will appear to streak away from a patch of sky in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16816-gemini-constellation.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16816-gemini-constellation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">constellation Gemini<\/a> close to the bright star <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21940-castor-star.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21940-castor-star.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Castor<\/a>, which can be found rising above the eastern horizon a few hours after sunset in December, shining to the upper right of the gas giant <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jupiter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shooting stars associated with the shower tend to be yellowish in appearance and may be seen whenever the radiant \u2014 the apparent origin point for the meteors \u2014 is above the horizon. Take a red light with you, as this will help preserve your night vision, and be sure to wrap up warm and let someone know where you&#8217;re watching the shower from if you&#8217;re heading somewhere remote!
