But only temporarily.

                            Article continues under the video

This was not a good performance from Liverpool by any stretch of the imagination. Slot’s side were devoid of ideas. They may have looked a little bit more organised at the back, but Sunderland missing Wilson Isidor who is their best forward, may have contributed to that.

Overall, Liverpool’s build-up structure and composition in possession looked like chaos. The Reds ‘created’ chances on paper. But how quality were these chances?

Most of them were long shots, taken from distance which is exactly what Sunderland wanted Liverpool to do. In total Liverpool’s 23 shots in this game amounted to an xG of 1.37.

That’s 0.060 xG per shot.

When looking at ‘big’ chances created – Liverpool produced just one. Alexander Isak struggled again making just 14 touches in total in this game. For comparison, Alisson Becker had 34 touches.

A match in which your goalkeeper touches the ball more often than your record club signing no.9 is not a match that should be celebrated. Especially against a newly promoted side.

It’s a match that has not ended in defeat but has also not salvaged the precarious nature of Slot’s position as head coach of the football club.

His post-match comments will do him no good either. In fact his words when explaining Liverpool’s current situation should confirm that it’s all over for him at the club.

When asked about his decision to take off Cody Gakpo at half-time, Slot made an outrageous comment:

“In my opinion, Cody struggled to dominate the one-v-ones,” Slot said.

“If you want to have any chance against, like I said, they were pressing high but also in multiple situations they were in a low block, [so] the way to score is quite simple: you need a moment of magic from a player or you need a set-piece to score.”

The comments about Gakpo are not alarming. It’s the comments after which raise massive concerns and confirm Slot has no idea what he is doing.

Slot says that in order to score against a low-block you need a ‘moment of magic’ or a ‘set-piece.’

This is such an outrageous comment coming from a head-coach who is supposed to be managing one of the best clubs in the world.

Are a ‘moment of magic’ or ‘set-piece’ really the only ways to breakdown a low-block?

The best managers always find a way to secure victory and they don’t rely on those two factors alone. They set-up a system that works. You can do that. You can build a system that draws out low-blocks and is able to unlock them.

The fact that Slot just suggested he’s relying on a ‘moment of magic’ confirms it’s all over for him at Liverpool.

If that is his attitude and his approach to coaching, then he’s not going to last a long time at this club. Sooner or later he will be fired. It’s inevitable.

🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas home range

👉🏻 A new centre-back is COMING to Liverpool

👉🏻 Liverpool finally replace Trent Alexander-Arnold with brilliant playmaker

👉🏻 Centre-back confirms he’s ready to join Liverpool

Arne Slot’s words have pretty much confirmed it’s curtains for him at Liverpool.
