Official statements from both sides arising out of those discussions contained the <a href=\"https:\/\/president.az\/en\/articles\/view\/68647\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">usual pleasantries<\/a> and acknowledgements, but did not signal any significant deals were in the offing.<\/p>\n<p>A statement issued by Kallas\u2019 office did contain one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeas.europa.eu\/eeas\/azerbaijan-remarks-high-representativevice-president-kaja-kallas-joint-press-conference-minister_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intriguing nugget<\/a>, however. \u201cI am also happy to say that we agreed to resume our negotiations on a new Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and Azerbaijan,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>It was not until the weekend when the fanfare started blaring in Baku, with state-connected media outlets characterizing Kallas\u2019 visit as a breakthrough, erasing years of rancor generated by differences over the <a href=\"https:\/\/eurasianet.org\/azerbaijan-baku-denying-french-accusations-of-meddling-in-new-caledonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nagorno-Karabakh peace process<\/a>, the EU\u2019s criticism of Azerbaijan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/eurasianet.org\/azerbaijan-shrugging-off-criticism-over-media-arrests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rights abuses<\/a> and haggling over natural gas supplies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis visit not only eliminated accumulated contradictions but also laid the foundation for the deepening of a strategic partnership that promises significant benefits for both Azerbaijan and Europe,\u201d stated an April 26 <a href=\"https:\/\/vesti.az\/xeber\/politika\/novaya-era-sotrudnicestva-azerbaidzan-i-es-posle-vizita-kai-kallas-analitika-543971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commentary<\/a> published by Vesti.az. \u201cBoth parties demonstrate pragmatism, realizing that further confrontation is counterproductive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Details about whatever Kallas and her Azerbaijani interlocutors agreed to in Baku remain hazy, but the talks appeared to clarify the future Azerbaijan\u2019s role as a natural gas supplier to the EU. Aliyev had <a href=\"https:\/\/eurasianet.org\/azerbaijans-energy-relations-with-eu-experiencing-bout-of-uncertainty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assailed<\/a> the EU earlier in April for dragging its feet on the expansion of Southern Gas Corridor to handle a planned expansion of Azerbaijani gas supplies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the main pillars of the new stage of cooperation is the energy partnership,\u201d according to the Vesti commentary.
