{"id":612718,"date":"2025-12-05T00:35:27","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T00:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/612718\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T00:35:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T00:35:27","slug":"david-lammy-opens-door-to-rejoining-eu-customs-union-in-anti-brexit-rant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/612718\/","title":{"rendered":"David Lammy opens door to rejoining EU customs union in anti-Brexit rant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">David Lammy has opened the door to rejoining the EU customs union amid calls from within No10 to reverse Brexit. <\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Mr Lammy refused to rule out rejoining the EU seven times during an interview, where he also claimed that Brexit had \u201cbadly damaged our economy\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>While the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that a move to take Britain back into the customs union was not \u201ccurrently\u201d in Labour&#8217;s agenda, he said that it was \u201cself-evident\u201d that other nations had \u201cseen growth\u201d by doing it. <\/p>\n<p>Just a day prior, Health Secretary Wes Streeting said the Government should reverse &#8220;the economic damage done by Brexit&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"994da\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"8bb8e5ad00cb70ae99aee4b1aa803ffe\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201600%20900'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1764894921_455_david-lammy.png\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" alt=\"David Lammy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Mr Lammy refused to rule out rejoining the EU seven times during an interview<\/p>\n<p> | <\/p>\n<p>GETTY<\/p>\n<p>Similar sentiments have also been echoed by Sir Keir Starmer&#8217;s chief economic adviser and other senior figures within Downing Street. <\/p>\n<p>Despite the Labour manifesto pledging not to return to the customs union or single market last year, the Prime Minister is facing growing pressure from MPs and his close circle of advisers to rethink the policy amid bleak growth forecasts. <\/p>\n<p>Discussing whether he would like to see Britain in the customs union again, Mr Lammy told the News Agents podcast: \u201cThat is not currently our policy. That\u2019s not currently where we are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you can see countries like Turkey with a customs union seemingly benefiting and seeing growth in their economy, and again, that\u2019s self-evident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"0f0d4\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"f5cfeeb499c10d301b86a7fa0f026dd8\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201685%201123'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/david-lammy-and-keir-starmer.jpg\" width=\"1685\" height=\"1123\" alt=\"David Lammy and Keir Starmer\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Mr Lammy told the News Agents podcast that rejoining the customs union &#8216;is not currently our policy&#8217;<\/p>\n<p> | <\/p>\n<p>GETTY<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Prime Minister also suggested that he was not able to conflict Sir Keir&#8217;s stance on Brexit, saying that his comments were &#8220;subject to collective responsibility\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>After the interview went live, senior Labour sources appeared to swipe at Mr Lammy&#8217;s remarks. <\/p>\n<p>Sources close to Mr Lammy said: &#8220;He is in the same position as the PM.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister&#8217;s chief secretary, Darren Jones, also looked to have jabbed at Mr Lammy in the Commons, saying that Government policy would be announced in Parliament &#8211;
