{"id":613115,"date":"2025-12-05T04:50:36","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T04:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/613115\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T04:50:36","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T04:50:36","slug":"the-mancunian-way-criminally-queer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/613115\/","title":{"rendered":"The Mancunian Way: Criminally queer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The extraordinary story of the \u2018Bolton 7\u2019 PLUS How the Buzzcocks formed AND Another winter health crisis<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_imagemaker-2025-12-04T154024853.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Hello,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">They were \u2018gay martyrs\u2019 put on trial for an act none of them realised was a crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">In February 1998 seven men stood in the dock at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/bolton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bolton<\/a> Crown Court accused of consensual gay sex in the privacy of their own homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Gary Abdie, David Godfrey, Mark Love, Norman Williams, Jonathan Moore, Craig Turner and Terry Connell were all either current or former lovers, friends or loose acquaintances aged between 17 and 53.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">While homosexual activity was legal in this country at the time, a little-known aspect of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act ruled it was illegal when &#8216;more than two persons take part or are present\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Get news, views and analysis of the biggest stories with the daily Mancunian Way newsletter &#8211; sign up <\/strong><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/data.reachplc.com\/252194072307958?subsignupsource=SignUpMancWayMEN_edit\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">here<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">As such, the so-called \u2018Bolton 7\u2019 became embroiled in a high-profile court case which led to them losing their jobs and their homes being firebombed. They were attacked in the street and ridiculed in an episode which had a &#8216;ruinous effect\u2019 on all their lives.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_AMR_MEN_261125_B7_03.jpg\" alt=\"Terry Connell (centre) and his supporters, defiant after their appeal\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Terry Connell (centre) and his supporters, defiant after their appeal(Image: John Hunt\/OutRage! London)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">&#8220;LGBTs, and even many straight people, were appalled that these men were being victimised 31 years after the supposed decriminalisation of homosexuality,&#8221; says human rights activist Peter Tatchell, who backed the group and publicly declared the case a \u201cshort-sighted, stupid waste of police time and public money\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">&#8220;I was outraged that gay men were still being arrested for behaviour that was not even a crime for heterosexual men and women,\u201d he says now. \u201cThey were arrested as sex criminals, under little-known obscure legal clauses. None of the men realised they had committed a crime, until they were seized by the police.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Various penalties were handed down &#8211; and later reduced &#8211; by the court and three of the men were even made to sign the sex offenders register. But it was said two had escaped prison by \u201cthe narrowest of margins\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_AMR_MEN_261125_B7_02JPG.jpg\" alt=\"A Manchester Evening News article of the Bolton Seven case, printed on Saturday, 21 February 1998\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>A Manchester Evening News article of the Bolton Seven case, printed on Saturday, 21 February 1998(Image: M.E.N)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">&#8220;The prosecution was malicious and vindictive,&#8221; Mr Tatchell recalls. &#8220;No one complained or was harmed by what those seven men did. But they were demonised as hard-core sexual perverts. The police behaviour reeked of homophobia. The prosecution struck fear into the hearts of many gay and bisexual men. They wondered if they&#8217;d be next on a police hit-list.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Despite the personal trauma involved in being hauled through the courts, the Bolton 7 case did make a difference for other LGBT+ people. The backlash against the prosecution triggered a campaign that led to the final, full decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">As Peter Tatchell says, it was \u201cthe last great show trial of gay men in Britain\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/story-bolton-7-criminally-queer-32946992\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Our LGBT+ Writer Adam Maidment has been looking back on the case and has all the details about its great significance here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">A profound failure<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1764910231_474_0_image.png\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">With reports of some patients waiting more than 50 hours for a bed, it\u2019s clear Greater Manchester&#8217;s emergency departments are in the grip of another winter crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Royal <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/oldham\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Oldham<\/a> Hospital is particularly busy, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/greater-manchester-aes-extremely-busy-32994186\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">according to our sources<\/a>, with one staff member speaking of a \u201c52-hour wait for a bed\u201d on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">And as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/ae-manchester-hospitals-feels-apocalyptic-32994999\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">our Features Editor Rob Williams writes<\/a> it points to \u201ca profound failure of our health service\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cThe time when the government and health leaders got a grip on A&amp;E is now long past. But as a Buzzcocks fan, I was most interested to hear about the \u2018happy accident\u2019 that led to Steve, Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto forming the band in the first place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">It all happened during that infamous Sex Pistols gig at the Lesser Free Trade Hall &#8211; the one every man and his dog claims they were at. Best suffered from alcoholism for most of his life.
