It is paid to around 13 million Brits a year and is available at age 66 for both men and women who have paid at least 10 years&#8217; worth of <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/finance\/personalfinance\/2034520\/state-pensioners-payment-boost-national-insurance-contributions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Insurance (NI) contributions. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, many people approaching <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/finance\/personalfinance\/2037749\/state-pension-warning-retirement-tax-sunday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retirement<\/a> age may not be aware that to receive the full new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/state-pension\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a> payment of \u00a3230.25 each week, they will need around 35 years&#8217; worth of NI contributions. If you have been \u2018contracted out\u2019 of the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/state-pension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a> you may need more NI contributions to qualify for the full amount. Brits are also being warned of an increase to the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/state-pension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a> age, which is set to rise to 67 between 2026 and 2028, with a further planned rise to 68 by the mid-2040s.<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">You will need at least 10 qualifying years on your National Insurance record to qualify for any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/state-pension\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a>, although they do not have to be 10 qualifying years in a row.<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">If you have lived or worked abroad, you might still be able to get some form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/state-pension\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">You might also qualify if you have paid married women\u2019s or widows\u2019 reduced rate contributions &#8211; find out more about this via <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/reduced-national-insurance-married-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">GOV.UK.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">If you get the full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/state-pension\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a> you will be getting the maximum amount of <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/state-pension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a> a person can receive.<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">To get this, you will need around 35 qualifying years. If you have between 10 and 35 years, then you will get a portion of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/state-pension\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a> unless you buy additional NI years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When you are working you pay National Insurance and get a qualifying year if:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>you\u2019re employed and earning over \u00a3242 a week from one employer<\/li>\n<li>you\u2019re self-employed and paying NI contributions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>You can get National Insurance credits if you:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>claim Child Benefit for a child under 12 (or under 16 before 2010)<\/li>\n<li>get Jobseeker\u2019s Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance<\/li>\n<li>receive Carer\u2019s Allowance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are not working or getting National Insurance credits, you might be able to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions if you\u2019re not in one of these groups but want to increase your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/state-pension\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a> amount. Find out more on the GOV.UK website here.<\/p>\n<p>You can have gaps in your NI record and still get the full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/state-pension\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a>. You can get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/state-pension\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a> statement, which will tell you how much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/state-pension\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a> you may get.
