{"id":613793,"date":"2025-12-05T12:34:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T12:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/613793\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T12:34:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T12:34:17","slug":"eu-slaps-e120m-fine-on-elon-musks-x-straining-ties-with-us-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/613793\/","title":{"rendered":"EU slaps \u20ac120M fine on Elon Musk\u2019s X, straining ties with US \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>X was found in breach of transparency obligations it faces as a very large online platform under the EU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/bills\/609148\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digital Services Act.<\/a> The Commission said the design of X\u2019s blue checkmark is \u201cdeceptive,\u201d after it was changed from user<strong> <\/strong>verification into a paid feature.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The EU&#8217;s executive also said X\u2019s advertising library lacks transparency and that it fails to provide access to public data for researchers as required by the law.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The fine marks the conclusion of only one part of the EU\u2019s probe into X, which opened almost two years ago as the first one under the DSA. Other major parts, such as on X\u2019s efforts to counter the spread of illegal content and battle information manipulation, are still ongoing. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission\u2019s Executive Vice President for Tech Sovereignty Henna Virkkunen contrasted the EU\u2019s decision on\u00a0X with a separate decision on TikTok <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_25_2940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also released Friday<\/a>.\u00a0The investigation into TikTok\u2019s ad library was closed with no fine because the company offered to change the design of its service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not here to impose the highest fines, we\u2019re here to make sure that our digital legislation is enforced. If you comply with our rules, you don\u2019t get a fine,\u201d Virkkunen told reporters at a briefing Friday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under the DSA, companies can be fined up to 6 percent of global annual turnover.
