Lyndon Land is making the most of life at the age of 63 by cycling, walking and gardening \u2013 things he could not do a few months ago. Thanks to the staff at the Day Surgery Centre (DSC) at Castle Hill Hospital<\/a>, he was able to have a hip replacement, which has enabled him to return to the physical activities he used to love.<\/p>\n

Even better, he was in and out of hospital in just nine hours. Mr Land was chosen as the ideal candidate to have this particular surgery done as a day case<\/a>, as part of a new way of treating patients in the DSC.<\/p>\n

More of these types of operations are being performed and it is hoped to eventually treat up to ten patients<\/a> a week via this method. Mr Land, of Gilberdyke, said: \u201cIt\u2019s been a life-changing operation for me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s really incredible is I had no pain at all following the operation. The staff were absolutely amazing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came into hospital at 7am and was back at home by 4.30pm. Before the operation, I was on a waiting list and was experiencing a lot of pain, which I was managing with medication.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t able to do a lot of things I enjoy, as I had to walk around on crutches. I feel like this has given me my life back and I want to say a big thank you to everyone involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Land\u2019s wife, Margaret said: \u201cIt\u2019s amazing \u2013 the surgeon has done a fantastic job! It was awful seeing the pain Lyndon was in before the operation.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s very strong-willed and I think that\u2019s helped a lot with his recovery.\u201d The DSC operates like a mini hospital.<\/p>\n

Patients can have X-rays, surgery in theatres and be seen by physiotherapists and pharmacists \u2013 all in the same place. The service is also available at Goole<\/a> Hospital.<\/p>\n

Tom Symes, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, performed the operation on Mr Land. He said: \u201cMr Land had a great experience and he had very little pain after his surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cHip and knee replacements can be safely performed as a day case, as long as the patient has no major medical problems. If the patient knows what to expect, then it gives them the confidence to go home on the same day.<\/p>\n
