This would require a separate parliamentary vote and could involve random selection if more eligible citizens come forward than are needed.

Meanwhile, all men born after January 1 2008, will be required to undergo medical examination. Universal medical examinations were essential, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said, so that in the event of an attack, Germany would not lose time determining “who is operationally capable as a homeland protector and who is not.”

Germans protest

Most young Germans have responded negatively to the changes. Students from schools across Germany have said they will join protests to oppose the vote.

“We don’t want to spend half a year of our lives locked up in barracks, being trained in drill and obedience and learning to kill,” the organisers of the protests said in a statement.

“War offers no prospects for the future and destroys our livelihoods,” they added.

The Left Party’s Desiree Becker said young people should “strike against the reintroduction of conscription” and educate themselves about conscientious objection.

Home

World

Germany votes to introduce voluntary military conscription for 18-year-olds as Ukraine war drags on

End of Article

Under the changes, young adults in Germany will be handed out a questionnaire from January 2026, asking them…

[5310
191696,191698,2000,299,191697,1824,191695,191700,191701,191694,191699
0":"post-615106","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-germany","8":"tag-bundestag-conscription-vote","9":"tag-conscription-rules-germany","10":"tag-eu","11":"tag-europe","12":"tag-german-army-recruitment","13":"tag-germany","14":"tag-germany-military-service","15":"tag-medical-examination-conscription-germany","16":"tag-needs-based-conscription-germany","17":"tag-voluntary-military-conscription-germany","18":"tag-youth-protests-germany-conscription
["GET
