The Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust) has appointed an Integrated Consultant Team (ICT) to lead the development of a new purpose built medical teaching building on the Altnagelvin Hospital site<\/p>\n

Funded by\u00a0the Derry<\/a> and Strabane Region City Deal and Inclusive Future Fund, the teaching space will provide a flexible, modern and high quality environment, supporting staff and students to maximise their learning opportunities.<\/p>\n

Following a competitive process, the contract has been awarded to Arcadis, with its partner\u00a0Kennedy Fitzgerald Architects.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the appointment of the design team, Western Trust Chief Executive Neil Guckian said: \u201cThis is the first of many important milestones as we progress this project at Altnagelvin Hospital.<\/p>\n

“As a Trust we know that our existing MedEd West facility at Altnagelvin provides outstanding teaching, and this new facility will further enhance teaching space for the education of medical students and has the prospect of attracting and retaining world class talent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr Athinyaa Thiraviaraj Director of Medical Education in the Western Trust\u00a0and Senior Responsible Officer for the project said: \u201cThis is an exciting development for the project. The purpose built facility will significantly strengthen our ability to train highly skilled, patient centred Physicians. It is an invaluable addition to our medical education programme.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Ruair\u00ed McHugh said: \u201cThe appointment of the Integrated Consultant Team (ICT) for the Medical Teaching Facility at Altnagelvin Hospital is excellent news and marks a significant step forward for both the hospital and our City Region.<\/p>\n

“This \u00a34.6 million investment, supported by the City Deal and Inclusive Future Fund, is strategically vital to the region. This new, purpose-built teaching space will be instrumental in attracting and retaining world-class medical talent to the West, securing the future of our healthcare workforce.<\/p>\n
