{"id":616195,"date":"2025-12-06T15:39:34","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T15:39:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/616195\/"},"modified":"2025-12-06T15:39:34","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T15:39:34","slug":"bootle-family-making-such-a-difference-theyve-grabbed-the-attention-of-king-charles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/616195\/","title":{"rendered":"Bootle &#8216;family&#8217; making such a difference they&#8217;ve grabbed the attention of King Charles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Volunteers in Bootle have been working tirelessly to improve their neighbourhoods<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_Pauline-Shaw-68-and-Carol-Seddon-58.jpg\" alt=\"Pauline Shaw, 68 and Carol Seddon, 58\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Pauline Shaw, 68 and Carol Seddon, 58(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">A volunteer group in Bootle has become a \u2018close-knit family\u2019, according to its members, and their hard work and dedication is making such a difference to their neighbourhoods it&#8217;s caught the attention of His Majesty The King.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/bootle\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bootle<\/a> Action Group (BAG) describes itself as a community of individuals dedicated to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/woman-prisoner-home-rats-field-31257100\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">reporting and clearing rubbish<\/a> for the benefit of Bootle with a commitment to preserving and enhancing what is left of the town&#8217;s heritage. We meet the members at North Park where they are conducting one of their scheduled litter-picks and, by the time we get there, the group has already filled 12 large sacks with rubbish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">We chat to friends Pauline Shaw, 68 and Carol Seddon, 58, who are both standing in the pouring rain, BAG high-vis jackets on, with big smiles. \u201cIt just goes to show we\u2019re not fair<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/weather\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">weather<\/a> Wombles,\u201d said Pauline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Carol, who has been with BAG for approximately eight years, said: \u201cI work full time. I\u2019ve got a family so I\u2019m quite busy. But I love doing this because I\u2019ve met new friends and I enjoy making the area look better.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_Bootle-Action-Group-logo-which-was-designed-by-the-children-from-a-local-primary-school.jpg\" alt=\"Bootle Action Group logo which was designed by the children from a local primary school\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Bootle Action Group logo which was designed by the children from a local primary school(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cI didn\u2019t like coming out and going to work in the morning looking at loads of bags of rubbish everywhere. It was absolutely horrendous. So work like today is great.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cI take the example from my mum because she\u2019s 88 and she\u2019s still out cleaning her step and taking pride in her home. If everyone did that, things would be a lot cleaner and tidier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cIt would be lovely to get more volunteers because we are a good little group, actually. The group has turned into a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">These sentiments are shared by Karen Gillet, 59, who has been in BAG for the last nine years and previously volunteered helping tidy up the local canal areas. She said: \u201cIt makes a difference. You can see that when we finish for the day, you really can, and I get satisfaction from that, knowing we\u2019re contributing to our community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cI\u2019ve lived in Bootle for 25 years and the litter issues have got worse and you can put a lot of that down to the cuts in council funding. In that sense, we\u2019ve come in to try to help rather than just leaving things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cThe best part is getting out in the fresh air, meeting people I would never have met and the sense I\u2019m doing something positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_Karen-Gillet-59.jpg\" alt=\"Karen Gillet, 59\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Karen Gillet, 59(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Tony and Philip Jones are brothers and they\u2019ve been busy cleaning up North Park almost since BAG started. Asked why he got involved in the group, Tony said: \u201cI want to show my kids you can make a difference to your community so they won\u2019t come out throwing rubbish on the floor and so they can see there\u2019s a positive way of living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Philip added: \u201cWe help out in other parks in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/walton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Walton<\/a> and other areas. But we\u2019re here to make Bootle better and, for us, it\u2019s great meeting up with people because it is a tight-knit group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Last month, and following approval from His Majesty The King, it was announced that Bootle Action Group had been selected to receive The King\u2019s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS) also known as the MBE for volunteer groups. This is the highest award a voluntary organisation can receive and it is awarded for life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">The award was created in 2002 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II\u2019s Golden Jubilee and was previously known as the QAVS. The Award has been shining a light on the fantastic work of voluntary groups such as BAG for many years and its members are delighted to be recognised.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_Brothers-and-members-of-Bootle-Action-Group.jpg\" alt=\"Tony and Philip Jones, brothers and members of Bootle Action Group\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Tony and Philip Jones, brothers and members of Bootle Action Group(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Michael Brennan, 46, founded BAG in 2016 and wanted to create something that would bring the community together and make Bootle the best it can be. Responding to the news of the King&#8217;s Award, Mike said: \u201cWhen we were interviewed by the deputy lieutenant for the King, what they wanted was not just somebody, a group that goes out and does litter picking, because there\u2019s so many across the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cIt\u2019s what\u2019s different about your group and I would say a lot of charities and local organisations are led by paid staff whereas we\u2019re completely unpaid and voluntary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cWe do litter pick but we also do other things. We look after Oxford Gardens, which is a kind of pocket park, and so it\u2019s creating a nice, clean environment where people can go and feel safe. We\u2019ve also transformed some alleyways into community gardens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cThe key to this is not just going along and doing the job, there\u2019s got to be a legacy, and we have to know that the community are then going to take ownership of what we\u2019ve helped them create.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">He added: \u201cPeople will say to us, you know, isn\u2019t that the council\u2019s job? And that\u2019s a fair point. But I also say, the council didn\u2019t put the litter there. The vast majority of people don\u2019t do that but some do and it\u2019s a serious problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cWe\u2019re now helping other litter picking groups and these are also volunteers, these are the unrecognised people, who are doing it solely to try and better where they live or if it\u2019s just to help with them getting some exercise and good mental health.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_Michael-Brennan.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Brennan\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Michael Brennan(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cBootle has got an absolutely amazing community. But I think in the last 10 years, it kind of fell to the wayside, and it\u2019s just trying to get people out again and say, you know, we all live here, let\u2019s go out and do some something positive and provide something for the next generation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cI\u2019ve got children and I want to create something better for them. I love living here. It\u2019s been my home for the last 46 years and it\u2019s where I\u2019ll stay. So we\u2019re all here trying to make our community as nice as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Commenting on BAG\u2019s selection for the King&#8217;s Award, a spokesperson for the Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside Mark Blundell said: \u201cI think it would be fair to say that the group focuses on improving the environment of the area, encouraging local people to have pride in their local area through activities such as litter picking, raising funds to last trees, plants and flowerbeds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cAreas have been improved socially and environmentally with cleaner streets, a decrease in anti-social behaviour and increased respect for the area and each other.
