A Charlton Athletic fan died after a medical emergency at their ground, the football club have said.<\/p>\n
The side’s EFL Championship match against Portsmouth at The Valley, a lunchtime kick-off, was halted in the 12th minute while the supporter initially received treatment, and was subsequently postponed. The score was 0-0.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Charlton Athletic said it was “devastated”, and thanked the staff and first responders who did everything they could during the incident.<\/p>\n
“The club are grateful to supporters in attendance and the Portsmouth players and staff for their patience and understanding as this tragedy unfolded.<\/p>\n
“Everyone at the club sends their heartfelt condolences to the supporter’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”<\/p>\n
Charlton Athletic captain Greg Docherty paid tribute to the fan on X: “Absolutely devastating news\u2026 from all of the players at the club our thoughts are with his family and friends through this extremely difficult time,” followed by a broken heart emoji.<\/p>\n
Both clubs said information on when the match would be rescheduled will be announced in due course.<\/p>\n
Portsmouth also paid tribute on its website, saying it was also “devastated”.<\/p>\n
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family and friends at this difficult time,” said Portsmouth in a statement on their website.<\/p>\n
