A community woke up in shock this morning after an 81-year-old local woman was killed by a hit-and-run driver, after visiting her local shop. Emergency services were called to Longmoor Lane at around 4.15pm<\/a> on Friday, December 5, following reports a dark-coloured vehicle had hit a pedestrian near the junction with Third Avenue.<\/p>\n Police said the woman, who lived locally, is believed to have gone out to a nearby shop when she was struck by the car. She suffered serious injuries and was taken to Aintree<\/a> Hospital but sadly died a short time later.<\/a><\/p>\n The vehicle and its driver have not yet been found.<\/a> Officers are examining local CCTV to identify the car which may show signs of damage from the crash.<\/a><\/p>\n On Saturday morning, there was an eerie feeling in Fazakerley<\/a> as rain drizzled down on a large police cordon still in place on Third Avenue and a hunt for the driver remained ongoing.<\/p>\n When the ECHO <\/a>arrived at the scene this morning two police cars guarded a large cordon, shop shutters were down and the community was in silence – a contrast from the night before when “chaos” descended on the area.<\/p>\n Residents recalled hearing sirens and flashing blue lights as emergency services swarmed the quiet community. One person, who lives on Third Avenue, was on his way home from work when “eight” police cars raced past him.<\/p>\n He said: “As I got to the top of our street there was blue lights everywhere. She was hit directly in the middle of the road, our street was cordoned off completely. The guy fled down our street that\u2019s why it\u2019s cordoned off I think. Our street is bad for people flying down it, we have trouble all the time.”<\/p>\n One woman was heading to B&M at the time of the hit and run and recalled seeing “swarms” of blue lights. She said: “It was dark and heavy rain at the time so I couldn\u2019t see what was going on but I could see something in the road. It\u2019s a really bad road for being congested, there\u2019s always cars going up and down flying about. It\u2019s really bad.”<\/p>\n Her worried son rang her as soon as he’d heard what happened. She added: “I always walk to that shop. She was 81 you can\u2019t imagine she\u2019s walked far so it\u2019s likely she\u2019s local.”<\/p>\n The shutters on the row of shops on Longmoor Lane remained closed and a single bouquet of flowers were laid in tribute outside a Chinese takeaway shop, metres from the police tape.<\/p>\n On Longmoor Lane residents pointed to the corner of their street where the 81-year-old was killed. They told the ECHO how they saw blue lights flashing through their windows shortly after 4.15pm.<\/p>\n Shortly after 10am this morning, Merseyside Police lifted the cordon on Third Avenue and the ECHO spoke to resident who had been “locked down” since Friday night while enquiries were ongoing.<\/p>\n One person said: “I hadn\u2019t heard the accident I just saw all the blue lights and came out to see all the chaos, but nobody knew anything at that time. I saw on the ECHO later last night that it’d been a hit and run.<\/a><\/p>\n “Hopefully they find the driver responsible, it\u2019s awful. Our street has been in lockdown until this morning, I have no idea who she, we just know she’s local.”<\/p>\n Another family said: “We didn\u2019t hear anything and you couldn\u2019t see anything because of all the emergency services, they swarmed around her. It\u2019s so sad.”<\/p>\n Superintendent Siobhan Russell, said: \u201cI would appeal to anyone who may have any information to come forward. The 81-year-old victim had only popped out to shops and now her family are trying to come to terms with her loss.
