{"id":616744,"date":"2025-12-06T22:12:34","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T22:12:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/616744\/"},"modified":"2025-12-06T22:12:34","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T22:12:34","slug":"stirling-clansmen-hold-on-to-beat-edinburgh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/616744\/","title":{"rendered":"Stirling Clansmen Hold On to Beat Edinburgh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>University of Stirling Clansmen \u2013 34<\/p>\n<p>University of Edinburgh Mavericks \u2013 32<\/p>\n<p>First Quarter<\/p>\n<p>Edinburgh received the\u00a0kick-off\u00a0and started the game on their own\u00a030-yard\u00a0line.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mavericks\u2019\u00a0offence started at their own\u00a030-yard\u00a0line\u00a0and\u00a0only gained a few yards before punting.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stirling\u2019s\u00a0first\u00a0offensive\u00a0drive was more successful than\u00a0Edinburgh\u2019s.\u00a0They ran for a first down and then some before getting two\u00a0penalties\u00a0back-to-back. Despite another solid run the\u00a0Clansmen had been pushed too far back and could\u00a0not\u00a0get another first down.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Edinburgh\u2019s next drive was\u00a0arguably worse\u00a0than their first.\u00a0The snap was fumbled\u00a0twice\u00a0before their quarterback\u00a0got sacked,\u00a0threw an incomplete pass, and another that only moved them a couple ofyards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After Edinburgh\u2019s punt\u00a0the Clansmen made solid progress\u00a0down the field before a quarterback scramble got\u00a0them\u00a0the first down.\u00a0A second quarterback\u00a0run\u00a0set them up for a running back handoff that took them to within the 10-yard line.\u00a0Stirling managed to make it to the\u00a0one-yard\u00a0line before Edinburgh sacked them.\u00a0An incomplete pass from Stirling\u00a0forced\u00a0them to go for it on\u00a0fourth down, where the Mavericks batted the ball away from its intended\u00a0receiver.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Edinburgh took the field at their own\u00a0one-yard\u00a0line and threw for a first down before an assortment of incomplete passes brought their punt team back out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Clansmen started their next drive with\u00a0a penalty\u00a0that pushed them even deeper into their own territory.\u00a0Their run game continued to dominate, and they ran for another first down to put them at midfield at the end of the first quarter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Second Quarter<\/p>\n<p>A penalty on the Mavericks pushed Stirling closer to the endzone after a pass put them at the 35-yard line. Another pass was caught and the yards after the catch took the Clansmen into the redzone before a run put them within the five-yard line. Stirling handed the ball off to their running back who ran it straight up the gut for the touchdown. The Clansmen\u00a0chose\u00a0to\u00a0throw\u00a0for a two-point conversion which they got.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Maverick\u2019s offense took the field at their own 40-yard line. Their quarterback evaded pressure from Stirling\u2019s defence and\u00a0threw downfield to take them close to the redzone.\u00a0Their next snap went nowhere near their quarterback who picked it up and tossed it to the five-yard line.\u00a0Edinburgh then got pushed back\u00a0five yards for a false start\u00a0penalty but\u00a0managed to throw a complete pass that put them at the\u00a0two-yard line.\u00a0After a few more penalties on both sides of the ball, the Mavericks threw a slant\u00a0which was ran into the endzone for the touchdown. The Mavericks also\u00a0elected\u00a0to go for a\u00a0two-point\u00a0conversion but there was a flag on\u00a0offense, and they decided to kick an extra point instead. The snap was too\u00a0high,\u00a0and the holder had to fall on the\u00a0ball,\u00a0so the kick was no good.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stirling returned the\u00a0kick-off\u00a0to midfield, before\u00a0a holding penalty pushed them back and stopped them getting the first down.\u00a0The Clansmen managed to recover the drive, throwing\u00a0for\u00a0a first down and\u00a0running for another to put them in the redzone.\u00a0A penalty on the Clansmen pushed them back five yards but then a penalty on Edinburgh pushed them right back to the\u00a015-yard\u00a0line again. After a run for the first down, Stirling threw to the endzone where it was caught for their second touchdown of the day. Once again, they went for a\u00a0two-point\u00a0conversion; this time the throw was not caught.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mavericks offense\u00a0proceeded\u00a0to throw not one, not two, but three incompletions before the punt team came on. The snap was not\u00a0caught,\u00a0and the punter\u00a0ultimately had\u00a0to fall on the ball.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stirling took the field within the redzone and\u00a0immediately\u00a0ran the ball up the gut for a touchdown. Their\u00a0two-point\u00a0conversion was batted down by Edinburgh\u2019s defence\u00a0to\u00a0extend\u00a0the Clansmen\u2019s lead\u00a0to\u00a020-6.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The kick-off was fumbled by Edinburgh\u2019s returner and recovered by Stirling who then return to the field.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Clansmen threw\u00a0an\u00a0incomplete pass before throwing deep downfield into double coverage where it was intercepted by Edinburgh.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Maverick\u2019s took the field deep in their own territory. They ran for a first down and then\u00a0on the next play when the receiver was about to get tackled, he tossed the ball to\u00a0his teammate\u00a0whose yards after the catch moved the chains.\u00a0Edinburgh continued making progress as they threw for another first down to put them at Stirling\u2019s 30-yard line with two minutes left in the half.\u00a0The Mavericks got\u00a0two more first downs \u2013 one passing, and one because of a pass interference penalty on the Clansmen.\u00a0Edinburgh\u2019squarterback stepped back to pass before deciding to run\u00a0all the way into the endzone for a touchdown. The two-point\u00a0conversion was not caught. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stirling made some\u00a0good progress\u00a0before a sack pushed them back. The rest of the Clansmen\u2019s drive got them nowhere before halftime.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Third Quarter<\/p>\n<p>The Clansmen received the ball to start the second\u00a0half but\u00a0did not manage to move the chains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Edinburgh\u2019s next drive was much like Stirling\u2019s, and they also punted after only getting a handful of yards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stirling returned the punt to around midfield before\u00a0handing it to their running back who took it for a first down and then some. Edinburgh managed to intercept a pass downfield but a flag on the play took it back and they replayed the down. The Clansmen threw a first down and ran for another that put them back in the redzone before a high snap pushed them back to the 40. they made some progress before throwing on fourth down, where it was picked off by\u00a0Edinburgh\u00a0again.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mavericks did not make the most of their offense being back on the field\u00a0and only gained a handful of yards. Edinburgh then threw into triple coverage where the ball was technically caught \u2013 just not by a Maverick. Stirling ran back the interception to the two-yard line to nicely set up their offense\u00a0who ran the ball in for a touchdown\u00a0immediately. This time when they chose to go for a two-point conversion they managed it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Edinburgh returned the kick-off to\u00a0their own 20-yard line. They threw for a first down before throwing a few incompletions\u00a0and then a quarterback scramble that sent them at least 20 yards downfield.\u00a0Their passing game thrived for a few plays, getting them a first down and then into the redzone before a quarterback run got\u00a0them\u00a0the touchdown. Edinburgh went for a two-point\u00a0conversion\u00a0and\u00a0the pass to the endzone was caught.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth Quarter<\/p>\n<p>The Clansmen\u2019s offense returned for all of one series before punting the ball back to Edinburgh.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the Mavericks had spent all game overthrowing their receivers, this drive was filled with complete passes to move them deep downfield. Stirling continued to pressure Edinburgh\u2019s quarterback who\u00a0brieflyscrambled before passing the ball to a\u00a0wide-open\u00a0receiver who ran the ball in for a touchdown. Their two-point conversion however was not caught.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stirling\u2019s lead was shrinking, and they answered with\u00a0two massive rushing plays to take them from midfield to within the ten-yard line. A penalty then pushed them back to the 15 before another run took them back to within the five. As with the rest of the drive, the Clansmen handed off the ball to their running back who took it straight up the gut for their\u00a0fourth\u00a0rushing touchdown of the game.\u00a0This time Stirling chose to kick an extra point which they did not get.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mavericks returned the\u00a0kick-off\u00a0about 60 yards to start the drive at the Clansmen\u2019s 20-yard line.\u00a0The ball was caught on second down and ran into the endzone for the\u00a0final score of the game. Edinburgh\u00a0attempted\u00a0a two-point conversion to tie the game but their\u00a0receiver\u00a0did not make it into the endzone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Clansmen got nowhere and punted back to Edinburgh.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mavericks managed to get a first down before having to go for it on 4th\u00a0and 10 where\u00a0it\u00a0was not caught.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stirling took the field at Edinburgh\u2019s 32-yard line where they ran for a first down to put them\u00a0in the redzone.
