{"id":617174,"date":"2025-12-07T03:37:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-07T03:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/617174\/"},"modified":"2025-12-07T03:37:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-07T03:37:14","slug":"albanese-defends-decision-to-sign-off-on-100000-us-trip-for-anika-wells-and-staff-australian-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/617174\/","title":{"rendered":"Albanese defends decision to sign off on $100,000 US trip for Anika Wells and staff | Australian politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Anthony Albanese has defended his decision to sign off on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/dec\/03\/future-fund-spent-20000-to-send-ceos-former-executive-assistant-on-business-class-trip-to-scope-hotels-in-us\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a $100,000 trip to New York City<\/a> for Anika Wells and two others to spruik Australia\u2019s social media ban to global leaders at the UN general assembly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The minister\u2019s travel entitlements have come under intense scrutiny in the past week with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/anika-wells-charged-taxpayers-to-take-family-to-thredbo-ski-resort-20251206-p5nlep.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nine newspapers reporting <\/a>on Sunday that Wells\u2019 family went on a skiing trip to Thredbo in June using taxpayer-funded family reunion entitlements while the minister was there for an official event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wells defended this and her New York trip on Sunday as Albanese faced questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Albanese said the communications minister\u2019s short visit on the sidelines of the UN was helpful in getting other countries \u201cin our corner\u201d against powerful and influential tech companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wells had been expected to join Albanese on a flight to New York on a Saturday in September but a decision was made to delay her attendance as news broke of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/sep\/22\/optus-will-face-significant-consequences-for-triple-zero-failure-linked-to-deaths-federal-government-says\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three deaths related to a triple-zero outage<\/a> during an Optus network upgrade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Albanese said the government decided Wells would stay in Australia to deal with the incident but he later signed off on the last-minute commercial flights for her, a staffer and a departmental official to attend the UN events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen you\u2019ve got Australia, a middle power taking on these global giants \u2026 it has helped that we have others in our corner now, rather than the potential, which was there for us to be isolated by the these giants, the big tech companies who have a lot of power and influence,\u201d Albanese told ABC\u2019s Insiders on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI didn\u2019t get all the receipts \u2026 this will come as a shock, David [Speers, Insiders host], but I don\u2019t, you know, ring up and make bookings myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wells said it was a \u201creally tricky situation\u201d but welcomed the scrutiny, adding that everything booked and paid for was within the entitlement rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Taxpayers were charged $95,000 for the three flights. Wells and her staffer also claimed US$2,985 each in accommodation while the departmental official claimed US$5,970 for accommodation. All three claimed US$1,348 each in ground transport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The communications department also paid US$45,744 ($70,000) to host an event titled \u201cProtecting children in the digital age\u201d at the UN general assembly, in the delegates\u2019 dining room. Wells also held meetings with senior executives at Meta, Microsoft and Amazon, and attended several events and panels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The shadow finance minister, James Paterson, questioned how three flights could cost that much and said it should be referred to the parliamentary expenses watchdog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt bewilders me how she managed to spend that amount of money on those flights. And I think all of this should be put beyond doubt. I appreciate that everybody\u2019s going to have an opinion on which of those three options I should have taken,\u201d she told Sky News on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI genuinely chose the option where I thought I could discharge my duties in both areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wells said she \u201cused my family reunion entitlement within the guidelines, as every parliamentarian can do\u201d for her family\u2019s trip to Thredbo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Also in June, Wells travelled to Adelaide for official events but also attended a friend\u2019s birthday, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/politics\/federal\/wells-billed-taxpayers-3681-for-trip-that-included-friend-s-birthday-20251204-p5nkvl\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported by the Australian Financial Review<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Parliamentarians are entitled to claim allowances for official parliamentary business, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.finance.gov.au\/comcar#:~:text=COMCAR%20provides%20car%2Dwith%2Ddriver,and%20international%20guests%20of%20government.\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the finance department\u2019s advice<\/a>.
