Photo: Katharina Kausche\/dpa<\/p>\n<p>German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has strongly rejected parts of a new US\u00a0national security strategy which paint a bleak picture of freedom of expression in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a meeting with his Icelandic counterpart Thorgerdur Katr\u00edn Gunnarsd\u00f3ttir in Berlin on Friday,\u00a0Wadephul said he does not believe \u201cthat anyone needs to give us advice\u201d on freedom of speech, a principle which is protected by \u201cour constitutional order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While emphasizing that the US is and remains Germany\u2019s most important ally in NATO,\u00a0Wadephul stressed that the country was proud of its \u201cfree media.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a new national security strategy released by the White House late on Thursday, the Trump administration laments an erosion of democracy and freedom of expression in Europe and calls for a change of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe larger issues facing Europe include activities of the European Union and other transnational bodies that undermine political liberty and sovereignty, migration policies that are transforming the continent and creating strife, censorship of free speech and suppression of political opposition, cratering birthrates, and loss of national identities and self-confidence,\u201d the text states.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine, \u201cthe Trump Administration finds itself at odds with European officials who hold unrealistic expectations for the war perched in unstable minority governments, many of which trample on basic principles of democracy to suppress opposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Source: dpa<\/p>\n<p> \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"&#13; &#13; &#13; FILED \u2013 German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.
