Lee Jarvis, head teacher for St Martin&#8217;s <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/wales-schools\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">School<\/a> in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/caerphilly\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Caerphilly<\/a> has announced a short &#8220;firebreak&#8221; in a letter sent to parents, it has been reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">He wrote that it followed &#8220;a significant outbreak of flu-like illness&#8221;, with online learning to temporarily take the place of in-person lessons, to allow for a deep clean to take place. Symptoms reported by pupils and staff include vomiting, high temperatures, fatigue, cough, diarrhoea and headaches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">In total, there&#8217;s 242 pupils affected, and 12 staff members, BBC Wales has reported. <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">For the biggest stories in Wales first, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=aa0abd38-0db5-4492-99f3-e73baecff682&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">sign up to our daily newsletter<\/a> here<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">The school has indicated it aims to re-open on Tuesday, December 9, but that the situation &#8220;would be monitored.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">The letter advised to keep children at home if they showed any symptoms, even mild ones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Public Health Wales said it had been in contact with the school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">It stated the school had carried out its own risk assessment, and took the decision on its own accord. The headteacher has been contacted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">The news comes just days after a school in Neath <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/pupils-school-struck-down-infections-32966432\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">reported several cases of acute respiratory infections.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Public Health Wales has said it is investigating the findings at Blaenhonddan Primary <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/wales-schools\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"SchoolLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">School<\/a> in Bryncoch. Together with Swansea Bay University Health Board and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/neath-port-talbot\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Neath Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Neath <\/a><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/port-talbot\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Port TalbotLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Port Talbot<\/a> Council it says it is providing public health advice to parents and staff to reduce its spread.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Consultant in health protection for Public Health Wales, James Adamson, said then: \u201cWe are aware of several cases of acute respiratory infections linked to the school and are working closely with <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/swansea\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"SwanseaLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Swansea<\/a> Bay University Health Board, Neath Port Talbot Council, and the school to manage the situation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">\u201cThe flu season has now started in Wales and acute respiratory infections are common in children, particularly at this time of year. Most will recover well at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">&#8220;The number of absences from this school reflects the background levels of respiratory infection across Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">&#8220;The best way to protect yourself and your children is by having the flu vaccination every year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">&#8220;To check your eligibility visit the Public Health Wales website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">\u201cWe ask parents and guardians to look out for symptoms such as coughing, sore throat, fever, or difficulty breathing.
