We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 cglitp\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>A cabinet minister has shut down deputy prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/keir-starmer-labour-prime-minister-deputy-prime-minister-minouche-shafik-b2878994.html\" title=\"Starmer clarifies position on EU after Lammy talks up customs union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Lammy <\/a>after he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/brexit-david-lammy-eu-customs-union-brexit-b2878477.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggested that rejoining the customs union could increase economic growth<\/a> and repeatedly refused to rule out reversing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/brexit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Asked about his remarks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/youth-unemployment-jobs-benefits-dwp-labour-neets-b2879394.html\" title=\"Jobless youngsters to be offered work in construction and hospitality \u2013 and could lose benefits if they say no\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work and pensions secretary Pat McFadden <\/a>told Sky News the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/angela-rayner-keir-starmer-cabinet-labour-b2879554.html\" title=\"Angela Rayner will return to cabinet, Keir Starmer says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prime minister <\/a>has been \u201cpretty clear\u201d that the UK won\u2019t be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/independentpremium\/politics-explained\/lammy-customs-union-eu-b2878957.html\" title=\"How significant was David Lammy\u2019s refusal to rule out a customs union with the EU?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rejoining the customs union. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/bulletin\/news\/ukraine-russia-zelensky-starmer-peace-b2879558.html\" title=\"Zelensky to return to UK for Ukraine peace talks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sir Keir Starmer<\/a> is currently attempting to ramp up his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/brexit-keir-starmer-labour-customs-union-tax-rises-poll-b2878781.html\" title=\"Labour voters want Starmer to ditch Brexit red lines and rejoin EU customs union instead of raising taxes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201creset\u201d of relations<\/a> with the bloc as part of an attempt to boost growth, but he has insisted that the government\u2019s \u201cclear red lines in relation to the single market and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/customs-union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">customs union<\/a>\u201d remain in place.<\/p>\n<p>But in an interview last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/brexit-david-lammy-eu-customs-union-brexit-b2878477.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr Lammy refused seven times to rule out reversing Brexit,<\/a> arguing that leaving the EU badly damaged the UK economy and saying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/labour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Labour<\/a> should consider closer integration with Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>While he said that rejoining the customs union was not currently government policy, he said it was self-evident that other countries had seen growth after doing so.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765135836_351_PA-82637410.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Work and pensions secretary Pat McFadden\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Work and pensions secretary Pat McFadden (PA)<\/p>\n<p>Asked about Mr Lammy\u2019s comments, Mr McFadden told Sky News: \u201cWell, we&#8217;ve just conducted three trade deals this year, and that&#8217;s a pretty big difficulty if you&#8217;re going to join a customs union.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Asked whether the deputy prime minister was wrong in his remarks, the work and pensions secretary said: \u201cI think the prime minister has made that pretty clear in terms of the grand architecture of EU. By grand architecture, I mean the single market and the customs union.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cBut what I do want to stress is we do have a different approach to the European Union from the last government. We&#8217;re not nationalists. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis Ukraine issue\u2026has really bought brought European leaders together. That\u2019s not currently where we are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you can see countries like Turkey with a customs union seemingly benefiting and seeing growth in their economy, and again, that\u2019s self-evident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that his comments were \u201csubject to collective responsibility\u201d, implying that he should follow Sir Keir\u2019s position.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the deputy prime minister\u2019s remarks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/brexit-keir-starmer-labour-customs-union-tax-rises-poll-b2878781.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new polling showed<\/a> that two-thirds of 2024 Labour voters would rather Sir Keir abandon his Brexit red lines and join a customs union with the European Union than raise taxes on working people. <\/p>\n<p>It comes after ministers ramped up their attacks on Brexit in the lead up to last month\u2019s tax rising Budget, saying the decision to leave the EU had an even bigger impact on Britain\u2019s economy than critics predicted.<\/p>\n<p>Giving a speech on Monday, Sir Keir said it would be \u201cutterly reckless\u201d to use the UK\u2019s exit from the EU as a template for future foreign policy. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Brexit vote was a fair, democratic expression, and I will always respect that. But how it was sold and delivered was wrong\u201d, he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWild promises were made to the British people and not fulfilled.
