However, these initial reports are limited.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/live-updates-tsunami-warning-issued-after-7-6-magnitude-earthquake-strikes-off-japan-13481004\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"noopener\">Sky News<\/a> reported that several people have been injured in coastal communities, but that it was unclear how many.<\/p>\n<p>A hotel employee in Hachinohe City told the Japan Broadcasting Corporation, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/20251209_02\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"noopener\">NHK<\/a>, of multiple injuries. In this case, everyone involved was conscious.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, told reporters on Tuesday morning local time that seven injuries had been reported, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/japan-warns-3-metre-high-tsunami-after-magnitude-72-earthquake-2025-12-08\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a>. (Image credit: GREG BAKER \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p id=\"f0cb25bc-14eb-4c61-99a6-6fb0975a9585\">A tsunami has hit Japan following a magnitude 7.6 earthquake off the northeastern coast of Honshu, the country&#8217;s main island, earlier today.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jma.go.jp\/bosai\/map.html#6\/42.692\/145.789\/&amp;elem=warn&amp;contents=tsunami&amp;lang=en\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan Meteorological Agency<\/a> has recorded tsunami waves hitting Japan&#8217;s eastern coastline. The precise height of the waves is unclear at this time, but most are in the 3-foot-tall (1 meter) or less category.<\/p>\n<p>There are no reported deaths at this time, although there are some reports of injuries.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-2d784e41-ba1a-4c88-9230-5a95b6d6e16b\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Japan downgrades tsunami warning<\/p>\n<p id=\"a20d76ea-e4e8-40fb-8f54-b073644b85fb\">Japan has downgraded its tsunami warning to a tsunami advisory. CMEs have the potential to clash with Earth&#8217;s magnetic field and trigger geomagnetic storms.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow&#8217;s strong geomagnetic storm forecast is associated with the eruption of a solar flare on Saturday. The resulting CME is predicted to arrive at midday tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>The Space Weather Prediction Center noted that the CME could also have limited, minor effects on technological infrastructure, but this can usually be mitigated.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-f52f8ec8-ad0b-478a-a1e6-0961b13c62ee\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>And tonight\u2026<\/p>\n<p id=\"ad3d32a5-827f-43a8-acfb-1a9f39d3e519\">Parts of the Northern Hemisphere could see some auroras on Monday, according to Live Science&#8217;s sister site <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"http:\/\/space.com\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"noopener\">Space.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Space Weather Prediction Center has forecast a less intense <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/forecast-discussio\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"noopener\">G1 geomagnetic storm<\/a> as a result of a separate CME that left the sun on Dec. 4, while the U.K.&#8217;s Met Office has the more intense G3 watch in place for tonight and tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Our sun is very active at the moment. The Space Weather Prediction Center recorded another powerful <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/x11-flare-was-observed-080501-utc\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"noopener\">solar flare<\/a> earlier today. The earthquake struck at 11:15 p.m. local time (9:15 a.m. EST).<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.data.jma.go.jp\/multi\/tsunami\/index.html?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan Meteorological Agency<\/a> has issued tsunami warnings in three regions: the central part of the Pacific Coast of Hokkaido region, the Pacific Coast of Aomori Prefecture and Iwate Prefecture.
