{"id":622054,"date":"2025-12-09T11:32:19","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T11:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/622054\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T11:32:19","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T11:32:19","slug":"class-of-2026-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/622054\/","title":{"rendered":"Class of 2026 \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigel Farage has never needed\u00a0the authority of an office\u00a0to shape Britain\u2019s political conversation.\u00a0Nearly a\u00a0decade after helping lead the United Kingdom out of the European Union, the country\u2019s disrupter-in-chief is back at the forefront of national politics, widely seen as Prime Minister Keir Starmer\u2019s chief opponent. With only five\u00a0seats in\u00a0parliament, his right-wing Reform\u00a0UK\u00a0party is setting the tone of British politics after a surge in the polls and a commanding performance in this spring\u2019s local elections.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For more than two decades, Farage, 61,\u00a0has thrived as Britain\u2019s perpetual outsider \u2014 the man who remade the system without ever being accepted into it. From his early days railing against Brussels in the European Parliament to his role in the 2016 Brexit referendum, he has built his career on defiance and grievance, mixing\u00a0everyman\u00a0charisma with media savvy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These days, the beer-swilling populist is looking\u00a0less like a British\u00a0anomaly\u00a0than\u00a0part of a wider\u00a0European\u00a0movement.\u00a0Like Marine Le Pen across the\u00a0English\u00a0Channel, he has doubled down on anti-immigration rhetoric and moved away from his long-held Thatcherite economics toward a reindustrialization agenda aimed at the working class. And just as Le Pen has expanded beyond her base in France\u2019s former industrial heartlands to reach broader swaths of society, Farage is breaking out of his traditional strongholds to win over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/nigel-farage-reform-uk-polls-gen-z-women-populist-elections-conservatives-labour-brexit-tiktok-dei-housing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">younger voters<\/a>\u00a0and rural constituencies that once reliably backed the Conservatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Farage has an advantage Le Pen\u00a0doesn\u2019t: Britain\u2019s\u00a0first-past-the-post electoral system\u00a0gives parties the chance to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/nigel-farage-winning-downing-street-reform-united-kingdom-runcorn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clinch a landslide victory<\/a>\u00a0with just a third of the popular vote \u2014 roughly where Farage is polling today.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, Farage faces no shortage of challenges.\u00a0If he is to make a serious play for his country\u2019s top job, he will have to\u00a0show\u00a0his party\u00a0\u2014 riven by infighting at local level and still struggling to root out\u00a0more extreme candidates\u00a0\u2014 can\u00a0actually govern. He will also likely need to build up his party\u2019s political infrastructure and expand its platform beyond\u00a0immigration and opposition to cutting emissions to net zero.
