{"id":622842,"date":"2025-12-09T21:16:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T21:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/622842\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T21:16:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T21:16:16","slug":"french-pm-scores-big-win-as-social-security-budget-clears-major-hurdle-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/622842\/","title":{"rendered":"French PM scores big win as social security budget clears major hurdle \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The vote was expected to come down to the wire, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/french-government-faces-crucial-vote-social-security-budget-lecornu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as many feared that the<\/a> government had lost the support of key centrists and the conservatives who felt the text did not do enough to bring down France&#8217;s budget deficit, which is projected to come in at an eye-watering 5.4 percent of gross domestic product this year.<\/p>\n<p>But in the end,\u00a0all 91 lawmakers belonging to French President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s party Renaissance\u00a0voted for the bill, while a majority of MPs from the conservative Les R\u00e9publicains either abstained or voted in favor.<\/p>\n<p>The vote on Tuesday also exposed a rift between\u00a0the government and\u00a0Edouard Philippe, Macron\u2019s\u00a0first prime\u00a0minister\u00a0and a candidate in the 2027 presidential election, who felt the the bill\u00a0will not do\u00a0enough to bring down the deficit.\u00a0Despite being historic Macron allies, most\u00a0lawmakers from Philippe&#8217;s small center-right party followed his\u00a0call to\u00a0abstain.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly,\u00a0France\u2019s\u00a0political\u00a0extremes\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the\u00a0far-right\u00a0National Rally and the far-left\u00a0France Unbowed \u2014\u00a0came out\u00a0against the social security bill.<\/p>\n<p>Lecornu&#8217;s victory Tuesday\u00a0appears to validate, at least temporarily, his strategy of\u00a0trying to\u00a0seek a compromise in France\u2019s hung parliament. The PM in October ruled out\u00a0using a constitutional\u00a0backdoor\u00a0to push through legislation without a vote\u00a0to ensure his political survival,\u00a0instead\u00a0letting\u00a0parliamentary debates\u00a0drag\u00a0on chaotically\u00a0for weeks in the hopes that lawmakers could strike a deal.<\/p>\n<p>Had the legislation\u00a0been shot down,\u00a0it might have cost Lecornu his job.
